The Story of Wheat: Bygone Reminiscences of Thornton Dale
The picturesque village of Thornton Dale is the perfect location for the first event in our Nature Matters project, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to National Lottery Players.
As part of the 'Bygone Reminiscences of Old Thornton Dale' weekend, starting on 16th September, there will be a screening of ‘The Story of Wheat’, a film commissioned for HM The Queen’s Coronation year by Mr Harry Burgess, the owner of Victory Mill, Thornton.
The film traces the journey that takes wheat from the field, through the process of milling and baking, and finally to the shop. It features fascinating footage of village events, surrounding areas, and further afield, filmed between 1947 and 1953.
This special screening includes a voiceover by Mr Ashley Burgess, son of Harry, with a Q&A session to follow.
There will also be an unveiling of previously unseen photographs from local photographer, Thomas Wardill, introduced by his great grandson, John Garbutt.
The evening is organised by the Friends of St Hilda’s Church, Ellerburn. Tickets (£10), including locally made bread, cheese, pate and wine, are available from Wardill Bros shop in Thornton Dale or by phone from Liz on 01751 460391.
