Sheffield on Film
There’s nowhere on earth quite like Sheffield!
If you love the city, then don’t miss the opportunity to see the most amazing mix of archive footage made in and about Sheffield – the people, places, major events and everyday life all captured on film over the decades – to be revealed as part of Sheffield DocFest 2025.
Premiering at the Crucible Theatre on Sunday 22nd June, Sheffield on Film celebrates the proud history and unique cultural identity of the ‘Steel City’ through the lenses of moving picture pioneers, local filmmaking companies, amateur and professional filmmakers and local television.
From protests to royal visits, industry and the arts, wartime resilience to wacky student stunts, and the transformation of the Park Hill area from slums to streets in the sky, there really is something for everyone. Starting with rare footage of Queen Victoria visiting Sheffield in 1897 through to the local news output and regional news programming of the 1970s and 80s, experience 90 years of the ‘Steel City’ captured on film.
See Sheffield through a different lens, including the forerunners of film experimenting with trick photography, film as propaganda, rare wartime colour footage and even a weird seventies student production.
Be introduced to the diverse stories covered by local news reporters, including a blind motorcyclist at the Sheffield Sports Stadium, Sheffield Polytechnic breakdancing crews and the much-loved community characters that feature in the 1980s ‘On the Manor’ series.
Sheffield on Film premieres at the Crucible Theatre on Sunday 22nd June at 10:30 with a second opportunity to experience this special event at the Showroom Cinema - Screen 4 on Monday 23rd June at 13:45.
