This is the first part of a film made by an amateur filmmaker from Sheffield, Jean Gray, of her family on holiday in the Scilly Isles.
The film begins with father in the garden looking at a holiday guide for the south west. He is joined by his daughter, Julie, his son, Peter, and his wife. They all have a look at a book on the Scilly Isles. Two parcel van men carry a large case out of the house, load it onto their van (‘Sheffield Se . . . . Express’, 77’6) and drive off.
The family drive down to the Midland Station and catch a train. Peter and Julie sit looking out the train window and they arrive at Paddington Station. They take another train, which travels along the coast. They then journey by bus down narrow country lanes to Land’s End Airport. They have a look at their BEA flight tickets. They board a light aircraft and the flight over is filmed from on board, passing a lighthouse out in the sea. They arrive at St Mary’s Aerodrome.
Peter and Julie play on the beach, and bury themselves in sand. They do a tour of the Island, visiting the sights, and watching a carnival. They do more scrambling among the rocks by the sea, and go and collect their car which is arriving on the Scillonian ship. They go on a boat trip to another island, and the children run around some small stones arranged in a circular pattern. They spend more time on the beach and in the sea, and walking along the coast before taking the return boat. They then visit some caves next to the sea and other tourist sights.
