This is a film from the Douthwaite Collection of a family holiday to Switzerland. The film begins with two women looking at a map of Lucerne before walking along a street.  They continue walking around the city looking at the sights.  They take a look at a map of the area. Intertitle – Clouds among the Mountains There is a panoramic view across the lake to the mountains surrounding it, with two pipe-smoking men looking out at the low lying clouds. Intertitle – At Engelberg we take the funicular The go up the funicular, filming as they do so. Intertitle – and then the cable car to Trubsee This too they take, filming from on board. Intertitle – We make some Swiss friends A woman holds up a pussy cat, and there are some other kind of small furry animal.  They tour the area, visiting various sights.  There is a snazzy red and black sports car parked in one of the streets.  They explore further the streets of a city. Intertitle – A trip into three countries They board a coach and film some of the journey. Intertitle – At the Austrian Customs An elderly man on a small motorised bicycle gets searched by the border security.  They continue filming their journey. Intertitle – Lunch at Lindau They stop at Lindau and walk around the village. Intertitle – The Germans are more formal A woman on a bicycle gets her documents checked at the border. Intertitle – At Meersburg we take the ferry The coach drives onto the ferry and it sets off. Intertitle – Across Lake Constance They travel across the Lake, getting their tickets checked. Intertitle – Over the Rhine They drive over the Rhine and arrive at a town with a railway station, and continue on their journey. Intertitle – To ascend the Rigi, we first go aboard the Lake steamer They journey across the lake and arrive at Vitznau from where they take a mountain railway.  From the top of the mountain there is a great panoramic view. Intertitle – A trip through three passes They stop off near another mountain range, and the two pipe smoking men again look out at the view. Intertitle – The St Gotthard Pass They continue on their coach journey filming the surrounding scenery. Intertitle – The Furka Pass They stop to look at some ice caves. Intertitle – The Aare Gorge They film the waterfall and continue on the coach, arriving at a town, with shop windows full of dolls. Intertitle – The Bahnhof (Railway Station) There is an impressive red railway station with a round domed top. Intertitle – We entrain for Alpnachstad and Mount Pilatus They board the train, filming part of the journey.  From on top of the mountain they look down on the view below.  They travel back down again, and take a boat trip on the lake. Intertitle – A last look around They look at some of the decorated buildings. Intertitle – And so, with the sun slowly sinking over Mount Pilatus The sun slowly sinks over Mount Pilatus. Intertitle – We say, “Farewell to “Lucerne, city of light . . . “
