Context
Among the line-up of these local cinema adverts of the early 1930s are a draper and milliner, a cycle shop, a builder, a baker, opticians, mineral water manufactures, a car seller and a coach travel operator. Yet, only the most dedicated research will find any evidence of these nine local businesses, providing good and services for the people of Bradford. Here they are preserved in quaint animations that testify to their undoubted fine quality.

Yet, only the most dedicated research will find any evidence of these nine local businesses, providing good and services for the people of Bradford. Here they are preserved in quaint animations that testify to their undoubted fine quality.
This film originated with Mr Spink who owned a cinema in Yeadon, West Yorkshire. It isn’t known who made this film, very possibly Youngers Shoppers Gazette who made similar advertisements in Bradford during this period. The only one of these businesses for which there remains a trace for the casual enquirer is J.R. Lloyd Opticians, for which there is still a business so named on Sunbridge Road in Bradford. Falkingham's cycle shop was established around 1907 at 183 Carlisle Road by John Falkingham, who died in 1931. His son Cuthbert then ran the shop until his death in 1956, when the shop was sold. It ceased to operate as a cycle shop and was demolished a few years later to build the Manningham Sports Centre. The Falkinghams sold and repaired cycles and there was often a display in one window featuring a 'stick man' riding a penny-farthing. They also re-charged batteries, which necessitated keep a large container of acid in the cellar. |
