This is a film from a collection of home movies made by Jack Johnson of Pontefract. It shows various events in Pontefract and the surrounding villages.
The film begins with a parade, ‘the last Mayoral parade’, through Pontefract town centre. The parade is led by a Boy’s Brigade band and a highland band. People watch from the pavements. Also on the parade are Girl Guides and the Mayor. They continue back through town to St. Giles Church, where the parade assembles, and a guard of honour is formed for the Mayor and other dignitaries as they go into the church.
The History Society of Conisbrough looks around the Castle and later visits Hadrian’s Wall. This is followed by a glimpse of a wedding before the film goes back to Pontefract where there is scaffolding around a building near St. Giles Church. Various parts of the town centre are shown.
At the Wentbridge Gala on 29th June, Girl Guides can be seen carrying balloons. The family are drinking outside a pub in the sun with the two grandchildren, Farid and Emma. Then back to the gala, where there is a donkey derby, children’s fair rides and sports, and a dog competition, as well as Morris dancers.
They then visit the Carrawburgh Temple of Mithras, along with a school party. They stop to have lunch before visiting a historic town and the Grapes pub. One place is marked ‘Strip House’, where a man does a mock strip.
The film moves on to show Emma horse riding at Gredling Stubbs, and then the two children playing by a river. Then there is a Civic Trust Gala at the Castle, with a country market, children maypole dancing, a re-enactment of the civil war in historic costume and, finally, a tug-of-war. The film finishes showing the Jubilee Way under construction.
