This is a film made by a member of the Camping Club of Great Britain and Ireland, camping at the Walton and Polesden Lacey Club sites, an event to mark the 50th anniversary of the Walton Club, and a camping trip to Spain.
The film opens with a panoramic view of river valley. There is a girl in white dress, and the travelling campers stop off in a mountainous region for a picnic at the side of a road. There is a road sign for “Port D’ Envalira alt 2407m”, and further on, as they continue their journey, a sign for Andorra. They stop at restaurant, Los Monefros, in a flat dry area with donkeys pulling carts. They walk around a town, and there is a brief shot of a campsite. They then take a boat ride along a part of the Spanish coast. Next we see them camped among some small trees at the side of the road next to a blue Hillman Humber estate car and a yellow Austin. They continue their journey, passing Serta and reach an old town on a river. Here they camp then take a boat trip along the coast again.
The next part of the film features a campsite in England, packed with cars and tents, probably Horsley campsite. A group of people in formal dress, including a bishop, pose for the camera. There is a children’s fancy dress competition and various silly races. Two dachshunds play together, and there is a children’s three-legged race followed by stick dancing, and the whole event descends into farce with much clowning. They go for a walk on the cliffs with their dachshund. Then there is a christening.
Next, there is a promotional event for the Camping Club with a poster entreating campers to ‘Join the Camping Club’, being held at the site of the Walton branch of the club. An elderly couple walk across the camp site. There is a baby in a bath, and then we see a large promotional Camping Club marquee, with Club with grandees. The camp storage hut is made into a stage and a band arrives. Everyone takes a seat in front of the stage and dates are held up – 1913-1963 – to mark the 50th anniversary of the club. There is a performance of the Walton Camp Show, with the performers in Edwardian dress. Then onto to show scenes in the campsite, with people sitting having tea. Some go off for a walk through countryside. Then, back at the campsite, there some wonderful potty races and other events, including a tug of war. The campers all wave at the camera.
The film finishes with film back in Spain, of a harbour with boats, a beach, mountains, a campsite in a wooded valley and a market in a town.
