This is a film made by Vaughan and Co. of Hull of a garden party in Thorngumbald, East Yorkshire.
The film begins showing the Thorngumbald Recreation Club Notice Board, with the village coat of arms. A fancy dress procession of adults and children makes its way through the village, past the Methodist Church. One man in fancy dress holds a copy of the ‘Pansy Story Book’. One man dressed as a baby is pulled along in a cart by eight women dressed in white and carrying bouquets of flowers.
Through a microphone on a rostrum, the man then addresses the assembled villagers who have gathered in a large garden. Those in fancy dress line up in front of him, many play-acting, putting on a comic performance for the audience. Two other men, not in fancy dress, then address the audience. People sit in chairs watching, some with prams. A woman stands in front of a table which has a cake. Those in fancy dress pose for the camera, while someone else also sets up a camera on a tripod. Tables line the garden with food and other items. Some have a game of bowls, and there is also a game of hoopla, a darts game and putting. Others just sit at tables having tea.
