Title – Beverley Old and New
The film begins showing early photographs of various places around Beverley. It then shows contemporary moving image of other places around Beverley, including many side streets, back alleys and residential streets, areas of wasteland, derelict houses and showing the Minster from many different vantage points. A man examines some of the grave stones at the Minster and many of its carved figures, often viewed from unusual vantage points, inside and outside the Minster. This is followed by views across Beverley taken from higher elevations. A group of people arrive at the top of the Minster, looking down at the surrounding streets and landmarks, including one man filming with a cine camera.
Butcher Row has been closed for traffic and is undergoing major roadworks, laying pipes. There is more film of neglected parts of the town and of redevelopment, with houses being demolished. Major work is also been done near the canal, possibly erecting a bridge. The film switches to a busy Saturday Market, with market traders at work preparing their stalls and shoppers looking at the items on sale. This is followed by more views of Beverley, including St Mary’s Church and the North Gate and carvings of figures by James Elwell at Pinewood House, before returning to show more images of derelict sites and then a marching band parading into the Saturday Market and showing flowers in spring blossom. There is then a tour of some of the historic buildings, including a house with decorative reliefs, Lairgate Hall, a house with an old basement, Norwood House, and the Guildhall, inside of which a civic function is taking place with the mayor.
Back at the Saturday Market there is a fair with steam traction engine, “Little Weighton”, a fairground organ, “Melody of Mirth”, and again the man holding a cine camera. There are then shots of shops and streets lit at night before more street scenes, and more road works. We then see the railway line and roads covered in snow. People are sledging on the Westwood. Two snowmen are being made by the side of a road. One man splits his trousers while having a snowball fight. Elsewhere, small children play in the snow.
After the snow has gone there are more views of derelict sites, including School Lane, again with the man with the camera. Roadworks are taking place outside St Mary’s Church. More residential streets are shown and the Playhouse is having some exterior renovation. The film ends with views over rooftops from the top of the Playhouse.
