A man stands in a field of cows and gliders at Kirkbymoorside, giving a talk on the successful export of Slingsby gliders, and providing an account of the company, beginning with local businessman Craig Slingsby, a gliding enthusiast. It is stated that it is the only British firm making gliders. The gliders are shown being made, from Cumbrian timber and plywood from Finland. About a dozen workers are shown making the various parts of the gliders by hand in a large workshop. The plastic mouldings for the canopy are shown being made as well as much of the other detail involved in building the planes. It is stated that sixty were sold abroad the previous year, twenty to Spain.
There is an interview with the Managing Director, Bill Slater, who talks about their exports and about going into the Common Market. He states that a glider costs about £1,000. There is film of gliders, some doing acrobatics. We see five SE5’s being built for a Paramount film set in Ireland starring Julie Andrews, ‘Darling Lili’. It is stated that they are developing the smallest plane in Britain, the ‘Nipper’, costing £1,500 – one of which is shown (G-AVKH) – which won a design award two years previously. The film ends showing a glider landing.
