This is a film made by members of Wakefield Cine Club which shows the BBC filming them as they make one of their own films featuring a tramp character in Seckar Woods. BBC North broadcast this in July 1975 with the title, “You ought to be in pictures”. The film shows members of the Club and their families at leisure as the film is shot.
The film begins by showing members of the Club and their families having a picnic in the Woods close to where the filming is taking place. A man is having his hair done, presumably to get into character for his part in the film. Meanwhile, a small girl in a red dress is picking flowers. A man with a pipe stands next to a cine camera on a tripod, while another holds a microphone. At the rear of a car, film is being fed into a camera. One of the actors is being prepared to play the part of a character named “Waterston”.
A group stands and watches as the film crew set up and watch as a cameraman holds a camera on his shoulder. They then play games among themselves as the character of a tramp is wandering around. A clapper board is held up with the title, “You ought to be in pictures”. There is a montage of short clips: a steam locomotive, a bus, and a tramp. Two men stand in conversation over film editing equipment. There is a brief view of a television showing Dennis Healy on screen.
At the filming location, a man, presumably the director, talks to all those involved and they film a scene with the tramp.
There is a short break before returning to see actors having their make-up done, and preparations are made for another scene featuring the tramp. After another short break, we again see the girl in the red dress, this time asleep in a car. A group, presumably there as extras, are having game of football, while others sit around relaxing next to their parked cars. The clapperboard is seen again: Scene 1, Shot 5, Take 1. The group get up and head for the woods, appearing to be doing a search for the tramp. Again the clapperboard is shown: Scene 1, Shot 4, Take 1, followed by several others. This is interspersed with more shots of the extras playing games and relaxing. The tramp character is found and escorted off. The clapperboard shows: Scene 1, Shot 3, Take 1. There is more of the same, with the tramp being found, and a montage including the small girl playing with a ball.
