The film opens with a close up of a sign in the back of a van window - Old Time Steam Fair Castle Howard May 20th. There is a huge funfair which has been set up full of carnival rides and stalls. People of all ages ride on the carousel, and many of them are dressed in long coats. A miniature railway ride is full of toddlers and rides around on the track. The filmmaker captures many different scenes from the carnival, conveying the fun and liveliness of the event. There is a traction engine on display as well as a large self-operated organ. The day begins to get a dark, and the rides and carnival stands begin to light up. Two women get on a Ferris Wheel and go for a ride. There is also footage taken from one of the seats on the Ferris Wheel as it goes around and around, allowing for elevated views of the carnival. Huge crowds have turned out for the events, and the rides and the stalls are packed. People line up to order candy floss before the Traction Engine Rally begins. There are a few engines on the field, and a few race each other. There are also antique car on display. A crowd of people have gathered to watch the vehicles as they drive around in the field.
