Some of the men speak to camera about why they grow prize leeks, some take it very seriously others a bit of fun. Leek growing is a male preserve and seen as away to get away from the wife. They also talk about the best way to grow leeks both in the allotments as well as the local public house, The Lord Nelson, over a few pints of beer. They are filmed at work talking leeks over lunch as well as working to load coal into colliers at the Jarrow Staithes. The final part of the programme shows them competing in the Monkton Village Leek Show and ends with them either celebrating victory of commiserating defeat in the pub over a few drinks
