Title: The Launch of Superflex Juliett 1st July 1988
The opening view shows the ship awaiting launch. The launch platform is decorated in red, white and blue against the gloss red of the ship’s hull. A number of men in hard hats mingle in front of the ship.
Low angle shot of the ship shows the pristine paintwork and the name ‘Superflex Juliett’ painted on the hull. Two men tie a flag to a pole at the rear of the ship.
Schoolchildren waving pennants gather near the launch platform, some carrying balloons.
Workers look down from the prow of the ship at the gathering below. A high angle view show the children gathered together with their teachers, all very excited in anticipation of the launch.
Some officials and dignitaries arrive. A photographer takes pictures and a piper plays bagpipes to welcome them.
A woman brings two small girls to meet one of the dignitaries who is talking to a man in hard hat. The girls present a bouquet to the sponsor's wife. The woman thanks the girls for the flowers and all three of them pose for photographs.
A piper in traditional dress continues playing the pipes. The VIP guests make their way to the launch platform. Others arrive and follow on. Guests walk past the schoolchildren towards the launch platform.
On the platform a man talks intently to the sponsor's wife. Other guests wait patiently. Some of the men wear hard hats. Other guests chat amongst themselves as they wait.
The two girls who presented the flowers, are accompanied by a man who points out some features of the launch.
A close-up shows the champagne bottle for the ship christening mounted in a special cradle. The bottle is wrapped in bright colours and has a printed ribbon wrapped around it which reads; Superflex Juliett Friday 1st July 1988.
The sponsor's wife speaks into the microphone on the launch platform, and formerly names then launches the ship. She presses a button on a console in front of her, and after a short delay the bottle in its cradle is mechanically smashed against the prow of the ship. This is followed by cheers and applause from the launch guests and workers.
The ship moves down the slipway, and from the prow of the ship, balloons are sent into the air from large plastic bags. The ship slowly enters the river Wear.
The camera focuses on the faces of the woman who launched the vessel and the other guests as they watch the ship enter the water.
The chains which arrest the ships descent move along the side of the slipway.
A guest checks his camera as he prepares to take a photograph. Out on the river tugs help manoeuvre the ship.
General views follow of the guests, with the bagpipes still playing in the background. A high angle view looks down on the schoolchildren with their balloons. The limousines which brought the VIPs prepare to drive off. Other official guests chat amongst themselves. Slowly the crowds begin to disperse, although some stay to watch the ship out on the river.
A closer view shows the ship on the river.

[1986 The yard mainly made simple but steelwork-intensive flat topped barges for the North Sea Oilfields. The yard became the Southwick Yard of North East Shipbuilders Ltd on 1st April. It began manufacturing Danish ferries, known as Superflex ferries. The last Mark IV Superflex ferry was launched from the yard in December 1988. The British Government closed the yard in the same month. The yard was demolished in 1990 and the site levelled for redevelopment.]
