The film begins with the official cars driving through the streets of Harrogate, and the dignitaries can be seen in their official costumes and chains as they walk through the streets. After a closer shot of the Mayor and entourage, members of the town can be seen lining the street as they watch the parade pass by. There are shop fronts in the distance including Kendall and an Estate Agent's. The officials mount a podium and watch the service groups march past for inspection. When the procession begins, the Bus Station can be seen in the background. There are people in uniform and civilian clothing who make up the procession.
There is a brief section of the film which features men playing golf. They are teeing off at the 8th hole.
In the second half of the film there is another Mayoral parade including service men, women, and children. There are many shots of crowds and officials with a Harrogate back drop. The services process through the streets of Harrogate. Again, in the city centre, members of the procession salute as they pass the Mayor. And after the procession, the Mayor speaks to a few people nearby, and the crowd gathered for the event, as well as the servicemen making up the procession, disperses.

Context
This interesting film centres on Harrogate’s annual mayoral parade. The film begins slowly with the mayor and other dignitaries walking in the street, but quickly kick-starts when young military men and women parade for the mayor and the camera. The mayor is clearly overjoyed at the enthusiasm shown in the display and by the crowd who patiently admire the event’s proceedings.

Today, the role of a mayor in Britain is largely ceremonial and they usually have very few official duties. Mayors are often not elected and are instead appointed for short terms. There are notable exceptions to this rule such as the Mayor of London, who is an elected politician and is accountable to government. Mayors often attend and promote community events in their locales and are habitually invited to open new industrial and leisure facilities in their area. |
