Amateur footage filmed by George Bond of a street party down Ocean View in Whitley Bay to celebrate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in May 1977.
The camera zooms in on the Lenore Hotel on Ocean View, Whitley Bay, owned by the Bond family. Union Jack flags decorate the windows and Union Jack bunting hangs across the street. Residents are preparing for a Queen’s Silver Jubilee street party. People are beginning to gather down the Victorian terrace street with red, white and blue Union Jack bunting strung across the street.
A Labrador wearing a homemade red, white and blue collar races over to the filmmaker.
As people begin to gather down the street, two young girls happily walk down the street together, dressed in matching outfits of printed T-shirts celebrating the Jubilee, red shorts, and straw boaters decorated with red, white and blue ribbons. One of the girls is the filmmaker’s daughter, Lisa.
Children and other residents are seated at two long trestle tables loaded with food, many wearing celebratory paper hats, crowns or red, white and blue boaters. The tables are loaded with party food such as pineapple and cocktail sausages on sticks.
Maureen Bond, co-owner of the Lenore Hotel and mother of Lisa, arrives wearing a Jubilee ribbon rosette.
Back at the long party tables, adults and children are gathered, and party goers tuck in to the food. Orange juice is poured for the kids. The camera pans to the end of the street, which opens onto the Whitley Bay Promenade and a sea view.
The camera zooms in on the filmmaker’s daughter and friend eating party food. A man puts the finishing touches to a woman’s red, white and blue Jubilee paper hat. She turns and smiles to camera, also wearing a special Jubilee rosette.
Medium close up of a woman in red, white and blue clothing chatting to children tucking into food at the party table. Union Jacks are displayed in the windows of the terraced houses behind them.
General view of the party tables and party goers eating or chatting in groups on the street.
Portrait shot of a man with decorated T shirt and party hat who gesticulates at the camera.
Party goers are around the tables looking towards the sea front, with cakes, buns and sausage rolls arranged on the white table cloths, adults serving the children. A boy turns around to camera, waves and smiles. All the party children at the tables wave their Union Jack flags together.
Group portrait of six women in party hats.
General views of residents gathered along the street, the women all standing on a row of chairs. A last shot of a woman holding the hand of her daughter closes the street party sequence.
Dark interior footage follows.

Super 8 memories of a 1977 Jubilee street party
The children of Ocean View in Whitley Bay tuck into a feast of sandwiches, sausage rolls and cakes laid out on trestle tables for a local Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebration. Even the pet dog wears red, white and blue to the street party, captured on Super 8 film by a keen amateur, George Bond, who owned the Lenore Hotel pictured. His daughter and friend are patriotically dressed in Jubilee T-shirts and red shorts, and his wife sports a souvenir rosette and headscarf. This wonderfully warm and affectionate home movie is no doubt one of many cine souvenirs shot by dedicated amateurs at around 12,000 street parties held across Britain to mark Queen Elizabeth’s 25th anniversary. From the late 1960s through to the 80s, the imperfections of Super 8 filmmaking were embraced by amateurs and artists alike (British filmmaker Derek Jarman for one) after the medium was heavily marketed as the most affordable and foolproof ‘home movie’ medium. Perfect for Silver Jubilee celebrations such as this one, which offered a welcome distraction from spiralling inflation and the threat of national bankruptcy in the 70s. |
