An amateur film made by Victor Sidney Carman of the annual Newcastle County Budgerigar Society (CBS) show in 1956. Taking place inside a hall the film shows visitors looking over cages of birds set up on tables around the room. The film begins inside a hall with men, women and children looking over rows of caged budgerigars set up on tables around the room. Trophies and shields are laid out on a table.
The film cuts to another room where women serve tea to visitors sitting at tables. Another woman walks past carrying a large teapot.
Back in the main hall, more views of visitors look at the various birds on display. In a kitchen area, a number of women work to prepare the tea. They serve people sitting along a number of long table.
The film cuts to a railway train passing and general views of trees in a wood and a garden. At night a view of the moon in the sky.
The film cuts to an exterior of a large building. In the doorway of the building is a large sign in the shape of a budgerigar with the words ‘Way In’ written underneath.
At a table, a man takes details from a number of male competitors. Back inside the hall more views of the caged birds; a large sign lists rules and regulations for competitors. On a table in the middle of the room are a number of trophies and shields. Two men stand beside a cage while a group of men stand nearby.

In the other room a group of men sit around the long tables chatting while a woman collects used cups and saucers. One of the women holds up a cup and saucer to the camera and smiles. More tea is served to customers at other tables.

Bird fanciers converge in Newcastle for the annual battle of the budgies.
Fans and owners alike flock to the annual County Budgerigar Society show in Newcastle to admire the many caged competitors. This amateur filmmaker from Wallsend, Victor Sidney Carman, captures plenty of proud owners happy to show off their birds to the camera. Founded in 1925, the Budgerigar Society of Great Britain spread its wings to form a northern branch in 1937.
