Title: The New Cathedral of St Mary's
The film begins with of a procession making its way across a concrete footbridge towards the building site of the new St Mary's Cathedral in Coulby Newham. At the front of the procession are a number of altar boys, one of whom is carrying a large cross. Behind them comes Bishop Augustine Harris, Bishop of Middlesbrough wearing a mitre and carrying a crook. Behind him comes members of congregation.
A large crowd gather around the building site as Bishop Harris speaks to those gathered. General views follow of the crowd listening. A sign placed near to a cement mixer reads ‘Blessed Sacrament Chapel’ indicating where the chapel will be. Another signs reads ‘Sacristy’ followed by a view of partially completed wall.
A large stone sits on a table behind which stands Bishop Harris. He lowers his head in prayer and the crowd follow suit. The service continues with Bishop Harris reading from a bible before making the mark of the cross over the stone. Holy water is sprinkled over it followed by an incense from a special burner.
The film cuts to show Bishop Harris standing over the blessed stone now in its place within the structure of the church. A view of the inscribed stone cuts to show people looking at the stone and leaving the building site.
The film cuts to show a view of the skeletal frame of the church and a large sign that reads ‘Wiltshier’. The film ends with various views of the church at different stages of construction.

Come all ye faithful to Middlesbrough
Catholic pilgrims come to witness the blessing of the Foundation Stone for the new Middlesbrough Cathedral. On a cold November day in 1985, the faithful of Middlesbrough came to witness the blessing of the foundation stone for the new Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Cathedral at Coulby Newham in Middlesbrough. Produced by members of the Cleveland Cine Club, this film captures the service conducted by the Bishop of Middlesbrough, Augustine Harris. Consecrated by Bishop Harris in 1998, the Cathedral continues to this day to be a beacon of faith and worship within the local community. The Catholic Church of Saint Mary has been part of the Middlesbrough diocese for more than 100 years. The original cathedral opened in Sussex Street in 1878 and continued to serve the community until in 1976 Bishop McClean made the decision to build a new cathedral at Coulby Newham. The main reason for a new church was the slowly diminishing parish population as, since the end of World War Two, changes in housing and planning meant people were moving out of the centre to the suburbs, such as Coulby Newham. The cathedral was designed by Frank Swainston in the style of the cathedral-in-the-round at Liverpool and opened in 1986 when the Bishops chair or Cathedra was transferred to the new church. |
