The film opens with photographs of Alan and Marjorie Fairhurst in hospital holding their baby son Christopher.
The film cuts to general views showing the exterior of a modern hospital. Over a crib, a mobile of colourful objects moves in a circle. Into the room comes Marjorie who picks Christopher up and takes him out of the room. On a chair she feeds him with a bottle. Holding Christopher across her arm she rubs his back to gently to burp him.
The film changes to show Marjorie sitting on a sofa holding Christopher. Alan comes into the rom and she passes the baby to him. He begins to rub his son's back as Marjorie watches on. General views of Christopher being fed or being held by Marjorie.
In a yellow plastic bath laid out of the floor, Marjorie bathes Christopher splashing him gently with water. The film cuts to show Christopher sleeping in a baby bouncer. A small Scotty dog sits beside him. A pair of hands appears holding a small doll that distracts the now awake Christopher. He then holds the doll in his small hands.
Sitting on a sofa Marjorie feeds Christopher from a bottle. Alan holds his son kissing him and feeding him from a bottle.
A decoration above a fireplace reads ‘Merry Christmas’. Beside the fireplace is a decorated artificial Christmas tree beneath which sits Christopher in his baby bouncer. General views of Christopher in his chair is intercut with decorations and cards on the tree and fireplace.
Marjorie pushes Christopher into the living room on the back of a walker in the shape of a car. Christopher plays with the wheel which forms part of the walker.
In a garden Marjorie holds Christopher while three young children watch over the garden fence. Marjorie assists her son in learning to walk. They walk around the garden with the Scotty dog at their feet.
In the living room Alan plays with Christopher who is standing inside a fabric play pen. General views show Christopher looking out from the pen. The film cuts to show Marjorie and older women sitting in chairs watching over Christopher as he crawls around the room. Another older man picks Christopher up and hands him to the older woman who begins to play with him.
The film cuts to a cricket field with a view of a church, possibly Hexham Abbey, in the background. A number of large houses and another church with a spire surrounds the field. From a distance, a group of children play a game of cricket on the pitch. The film cuts to a Jaguar car that is parked beside the cricket field. Inside the older woman seen previously plays with Christopher.
The film returns to the Fairhurst living room and the family watching television as the now walking Christopher walks by holding onto a walker. On the sofa, other family member chat or play with Christopher.
Outside in a garden on a sunny day Christopher sits on a mat laid out on the ground beside an older woman sitting in a deck chair. A young girl walks past pushing a pushchair with a doll in it. A small aircraft flies overhead. The woman watches over both children playing in the garden.
The film cuts to Christopher being rocked on a rocking horse by an older woman.
The film changes, possibly to a room in a public house where Alan holds Christopher and walks with him around the room and points at a number of cards which have been pinned to a wall. Other people appear and food and drinks can be seen laid out on tables. There is a view of a birthday cake. Christopher sits on Marjorie’s knee and he is helped to cut the cake. General views of family and friends congratulating Christopher and cutting a slice of birthday cake. Christopher opens a present and takes out a doll.
The film ends with Christopher, now a toddler, riding along a garden path on a tricycle assisted by his father.
