This film by Chris Lawson, railway enthusiast and filmmaker shows a steam railway enthusiasts special excursion in Derbyshire.
The film opens with a view of a wooded valley with a railway running along it. A high angle view shows a diesel train running along the line, followed by a steam engine, pulling a passenger train.
The film cuts to a folded map lying with its cover upwards on some grass. A man in a white shirt walks across the grass, then to a view of a post on which numbers are displayed. One of the numbers reads 160. This is probably a post displaying the gradient of the railway line nearby.
A panoramic view of countryside follows, the camera panning left to right. In the distance travelling along the side of a hill, a steam train. A closer trackside view shows an approaching steam train [image blurred making identity of engine difficult] with a number of coaches attached.
A view of a railway signal box taken from a distance follows. Inside the signal box(?) a couple of notices are pinned to a wall. One reads 'Get A Grip On Things'.
Next a view of the stonework above the entrance to Totley Tunnel. The stonework is carved with '1893 Totley Tunnel' it was the former Midland Railway Manchester-Sheffield line between Totley on the outskirts of Sheffield and Grindleford in Derbyshire.
The film cuts to a Midland Railway warning notice which reads 'Midland Railway - These buckets must be kept full of clean water and used only in case of fire. In severe frost they must be emptied and arranged close to a water tap. Unless they can be temporarily kept in a convenient place where the water will not freeze'.
A more modern notice reads 'Way Out - Please Show Tickets'. The camera pans left to reveal a station sign 'Grindleford'.
A sequence of notices follow which are featured as title frames:
Title: The Last Six Minutes Starred
Title: Would You Believe
Title: John H Bird?
Title: 'Fraid Not!'
Title: 'But Have You Seen'
Title: ' John R P (Who Does He Think He Is) Hunt'
Title: 'The Grain'
Title: 'Pete Woodhouse and the Typewriter'
An overexposed section is followed by another notice which reads 'Film Show, News Theatre, and other information (indistinct).
The film then cuts to what seems to be footage of a football ground (?)
A long view reveals a small steam engine on an embankment reversing with a train of coal wagons(?). Next, the same engine pushes a line of coal wagons.
A trackside view shows an oncoming steam train (identity unknown), which speeds off into the distance.
Another trackside view follows on another section of line of the same train The engine is no. 48033 a class 8F-A, Stanier 2-8-0. It heads off through a station without stopping.
The film ends with an indistinct view, caused through what appears to be accidental operation of the camera.
