Filmmaker and railway enthusiast Chris Lawson looks at a North East Locomotive Preservation Groups tour which is the main subject of this film. Some location views are thought to be in the North East, but others are further afield in the North West.
The film begins with a shunting engine reversing pulling a train of coal trucks. The film cuts to a trackside view of an approaching steam engine. Two boards are mounted on the front of what is the tour engine, one reads 'The North Eastern' the other reads NELPG [North East Locomotive Preservation Group]. The engine no. is 4472 and is the famous 'Flying Scotsman'. The tour train heads off into the distance.
Some indistinct footage taken in a car follows. A brief close up of the driver, and scenery going by, possibly the camera hs been left running by accident(?). This is followed by what appear to be random shots of trees and hedges which then cuts to a high angle shot of a speeding steam training rounding a gentle curve in a cutting. This is another view of the excursion train seen earlier.
Another view follows of the same train from a closer trackside view. A bucolic scene next with cows in a field and a small stream going under a bridge. In the distance the Flying Scotsman speeds by on an embankment. Another general view follows of the same train as it goes beneath a concrete road bridge. A closer view of a viaduct as the train speeds towards the camera. As it heads away from the camera a board mounted on the back of the last carriage reads The North Eastern.
The film cuts to a station sign, Wetheral which is a few miles south east of Carlisle. The film ends with a long view showing a steam train crossing a bridge over a river, possibly the river Eden, which runs near Wetheral.
