The film begins showing the offices of the Evening Press, and the Gazette and Herald rolling off the presses. The senior reporter, Hilary Sanders, explains her role on the paper, finding out what is going on and what people care about. Then there is a meeting of the staff, led by the paper's editor, Canadian Bob Macmillan. Hilary gives makes some suggestions for covering the Pickering Carnival, which is shown with a children’s play area with rides and stalls. As the Carnival is shown getting ready, with children eating ice cream, Hilary interviews various organisers, including Victor Hugh Cannon, Chairman of Pickering Business. He explains that he wants the six miles of track that are missing at Pickering linking York and Whitby be reinstated, and the only business open to Pickering is tourism. A military band parades up and downplaying the theme music for the film ‘The Great Escape’. The carnival moves off showing the floats.
Next reporter Ursula Wilson does a feature on the village of Gillamoor, with a newly opened village shop. One interviewee explains the village supply of water as we are shown the views form the village. Then Jane Short from Sinnington explains why she likes the Gazette. Back to Ursula Wilson in Gillamoor who interviews resident John Guy about what he likes about the village. Jane Short explains why she left a busy life with the BBC to settle in the village and demonstrates some yoga positions, which she now teaches.

Reporter Paul Brook does some school profiles, visiting Helmsley Primary School and interviewing the Head teacher Jill Hardaker and showing some of the pupils. The newspaper layout person shows how he puts Paul’s piece together on a computer. A young lady from Norton is interviewed about why she purchased a copy of the paper.
