A home movie made by the Neesham family of Redcar recording a number of Roman Catholic processions, events and services relating to Sacred Heart Church in the town. The film begins with views from possibly two Corpus Christi Processions taking place both in the countryside as well as a town. This is followed by a group of women attending a religious garden party of event in the grounds of a large house. A procession of civic dignitaries and religious leaders are filmed entering the Church of the Sacred Heart, possibly in Redcar, as part of a religious service. Views show a number of Catholic clerics leaving a church are followed with another religious service taking place in the ruins of a church or abbey where the film ends.
The film begins on a procession of altar boys led by a priest walking along a country track. Behind them come children, some walking behind banners, followed by the adults some of whom are carrying a statue on an altar. The film cuts to a brief view of a service-taking place in a field.
[Magenta] The film cuts to show another procession makes its way along a road in a town watched by crowds lining the pavement. A car drives slowly along the road followed by men holding instruments. Two lines made up of Boy Scouts and Girl Guides follow them followed by a number of young girls in white walking behind a banner. Other groups of girls walk past, some wearing scarfs over their heads, others wearing school uniforms. A marching brass band comes next followed by a procession of nurses in uniform. Two lines of well-dressed women follow them. At the rear, a number of men in suits walk slowly alongside a number of altar boys. At the front of this section, four of the men hold a canopy underneath which walks a man in vestments.
The film changes to show a group of mainly women stepping off a bus parked in a field. Two of the women step down and begin to dance together for the camera. The film cuts to show a brief view of a large crowd watch a religious procession walking in front of a large building.
General views follow of flowers and plants in a large garden. A statue of the Virgin Mary is built into a small shrine beside a stream.
Standing beside a fence three women pose for the camera. The film cuts to show three other women looking at the camera, two of the women hold up glass bottles smiling. A number of other women walk past arm-in-arm smiling at the camera, in the background a number of large marquees and other people enjoying the event.
The film cuts to a large sign attached to a metal fence listing services and time for mass at the Church of the Sacred Heart. A woman walks past between two lines of boys who stand along the pavement outside the church. A procession of civic dignitaries, Catholic clerics and altar boys make their way past into the church. A Bishop with mitre and staff makes the mark of the cross as he passes into the church. [Very dark] General views show the inside of the church.
Leaning against a gate, a Catholic cleric wearing red, chats with someone off camera. A group of clerics come out of a building beside a church, some looking or talking with the cameraperson, they get into a car parked on the road.
The film cuts to show a procession of Catholic clerics walking along the aisle of a ruined church or abbey watched by a large crowd. Behind come a number of boys who are guided to a position in front of the camera. On a raised platform, a priest in vestments speaks to the crowd via a microphone. He steps down from the platform and comes to stand beside a number of other priests. A canopy is raised over them as a service begins. The film ends with a priest standing on the platform speaking to the crowd.
