A short amateur film produced by Peter Dobing and featuring his partner and cine club colleague, George Theaker, taking part in a Co-op charity fun run for North East Cancer Research around Bishop Auckland in County Durham on the 23rd June 1985.
The film opens with a group of men and women standing outside St Anne’s Church on Market Place in Bishop Auckland. They are all chatting and smiling, one woman smoking a cigarette.
A photographer poses five of the group in a line, all wearing white t-shirts with ‘Co-Op. People Who Care’ slogans. One of the men in the line is George Theaker. Nearby, another woman takes a photograph of the group. More competitors joins the line and the photographer eventually takes photos featuring a group of ten. They pose as if they are all about to start running.
A banner hanging from a building reads ‘N.E. Cancer Research Campaign. Fun Run. Sunday 23rd June’.
A small group stands around a woman as she tapes a runner’s number to the back of a man’s shirt. The Newton Aycliffe Pipe Band march up and down performing for a small crowd in front of a fire engine. Two policemen watch nearby. A small group attach a ‘Sports for All Start’ banner to a tree. The runners wait for the start of the race. Tyne Tees Television celebrity presenter Kathy Secker arrives and chats happily with the crowd.
The race gets underway as the runners run behind a Volvo estate car out of the Market Place and along Newgate Street, Gorge Theaker among them. A group of men standing on street corner clap. George Theaker and a woman jog along a path on a suburban street. Some of the other women follow behind, one running with a small boy who waves at the camera.
At the finish line, a young boy in a red top finishes first to applause from the surrounding crowd.
