An amateur film by Chris Anderson that documents a Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee street party taking place in Woodhouse Close area of Bishop Auckland, the building of an adventure playground by the Woodhouse Close community and the range of activities enjoyed by the children there. Sadly, the playground is only short-lived as the film ends with the site empty having been cleared by the local council.
The film opens with a street party and children sitting around a long table set up in the street loaded with sandwiches and cake. Some of the children are holding Union Jacks while around them adults help with the serving. A young girl waves her Union Jack enthusiastically while other children enjoy the food.
Out on a grassed area nearby children take part in an egg-and-spoon race after which a woman hands out cakes from plates. A small boy takes a triangle sandwich from a different plate followed by two women and a girl holding up their cakes to the camera smiling.
Someone dressed as a Womble climbs out of a green Mini-Cooper car, walks around and gets back into the car and is driven away waving at the camera.
The film changes to an adventure playground and a man standing on a raised wooden platform holding a saw. He cuts a piece of wood. Back on the ground a man works to tie a piece of rope around a tyre, around him stands a woman and a number of small boys.
A boy practices his football skills followed by general views of mainly women standing around the playground near a number of large concrete pipes. The women continue talking, one woman eats a toffee apple. Back on the raised platform seen previously the man attaches a section of rope to the tower. General views follow of adults and children standing around the playground, a young man kicks a football around with someone out of shot. Nearby a woman hands out drinks from a metal drum. A section of rope passes overhead and is seen been attached to a wooden frame. Another view of the crowd is followed by a man attaching the roped tyre seen previously to a large metal hook which is then attached to the rope to create a zip-line. A young man rides the tyre down the zip-line to test it. A number of children follow riding the zip-line from the tower watched by a number of adults who continue speak with each other.
A woman throws a dart at a square board covered in notes, the dart doesn’t penetrate the wood. Nearby a large bonfire is watched over by a woman. A number of children stand around, one holding a large stick for poking the fire.
Some of the children, including a toddler with a dummy in his mouth, play around the large concrete pipes. A boy rides past on horseback. Two children play inside one of the concrete pipes while around the metal drum the adults drink cups of tea. The children inside the pipes also have drinks in plastic cups.
General views of children and grown ups around the playgroup, some wearing eye patches. A number of youngsters collect pieces of wood from the ground and two women watch over a number of small children sitting on the concrete tubes. A baby sits up in his pram as two small children race past from out of one of the concrete tubes.
Inside a Volkswagen Kombi van two women serve sausage and beans for 10p, one woman stirring the pot of beans the other turning the sausages on a grill. A number of children race along a path towards the playground, a muddy faced boy sits on a concrete pipe eating a plate of sausages and beans and smiling. General views follow of others sitting on the pipes eating and being watched over by their parents.
A boy wearing a fake-eye patch looks up at the camera followed by two boys walking along a wooden log someway off the ground. General views show people eating and four boys sit on the log watching the bonfire, they raise their arms in the air and wave at the camera.
A number of young girls sit on one of the concrete pipes. A number of children run around a smaller bonfire before racing past two men playing guitar and banjo. Some of the children and adults dance along to the music.
The film ends with views of the now closed and demolished playground filmed during winter with frost on the ground.
