An amateur film produced by Donald Oates of the Royal Agricultural Society of England Show taking place at the Town Moor, Newcastle upon Tyne, July 1956.
The film opens showing a brief view of a horse and carriage travelling down a street of terraced houses with passengers and driver in costume.
The film then goes on to a show a pen at Newcastle’s Agricultural Show where a pig is being coaxed into a good position for a photographer to take pictures.
A woman guides a pig around a pen with a broad stick.
An excavator attached to a tractor shovels soil in a demonstration for potential buyers. An operator sits at the controls on the tractor as he uses the excavator attachment for various tasks.
General view of a pavilion built for undercover displays, showing a modern style mural painted around the entrance. Other pavilions of modern design at the show are documented.
The film cuts to a wooden butter churn or tub, rotating in its supporting cradle.
A photographer takes a picture of a long haired sheep and its handler in the showground.
Next a fancy dress parade, as it passes spectators sitting on chairs in the open air. The theme of the parade appears to be characters from Alice in Wonderland. Groups of children walk past the camera in their costume.
A race on a track divided into lanes follows where children have to complete the course while balancing a book on their head.
The film cuts to the grand entrance to the show, on which a sign reads ‘Royal Agricultural Society of England’ with two entrances showing the word ‘Admission’ above each gateway.
Next an equestrian event where show jumpers test their skills over fences. Out in the grounds between two marquees a handsome dapple grey horse has its photograph taken. Other horses put their heads over stable doors, one horse a fourth prize certificate attached to the door. Back to the equestrian event, showing a number of riders parading around the arena.
General views of agricultural machinery, including a Massey-Harris combine harvester and other farm machinery on display.
Brief views follow of sheep in pens, then a Taskers farm tractor pulling a trailer carrying a single milk churn competing in trials. Shots follow of a Hampshire pig in its pen.
Next, we're back to the children's sports day. The children take part in a sack race, and a book balancing walking race. Another race involves blindfolded girls up front guided by a partner holding onto a rope tied around their waist. Another comic competition involves blindfolded girls racing towards boy partners with a dish of food and a spoon. Meeting in the middle of the track, the girl spoons food into the boys' mouths.
