A Unique Town of Opportunity
The film opens showing the beach at Saltburn with an imposing view of Huntcliff in the distance. Other views show Cat Nab and the Ship Inn near to the sea front. Other views show the famous pier, railway station and the former Zetland Hotel. General street views follow in other parts of the town.
The famous miniature steam railway takes visitors on a trip, through the wooded valley of Skelton Beck. The commentary outlines the town’s history, followed by a view of the famous cliff railway. Views of a local fair show the face painting of children, followed by a view
of the beach. On camera a woman talks of the decline of Saltburn.

Pam outlines the current and future benefits and facilities for residents in Saltburn.
The film shows a building on Upleatham Street, the film leads us into offices there, where a woman working for the Saltburn Improvement Company answers the ‘phone. The commentary states that the S.I.C. was set up in 1997 to co-ordinate town improvement initiatives. The film shows a large table surrounded by members of the company at a meeting.

Ian speaks on camera about Saltburn and why it’s ideally placed to be a successful tourist attraction and outlines several strategies to improve Saltburn’s status in that regard.
A local circus or fair attracts crowds and amongst them are figures dressed in silver and walking on stilts. Another performance shows a theatre group at an outdoor location in the town.
The film cuts to a church which is now Saltburn’s community hall and theatre. A notice board shows a cartoon figure of an owl with a speech bubble which reads, ‘Welcome to the Valley Woodlands Centre’.
The film moves on to show a marquee at and outdoor event, followed by young people trying their skill with a diablo, a juggling apparatus consisting of a spool which is whirled and tossed on a string attached between two handsticks. In another marquee others do fitness dancing. General views follow of the town centre including the railway station.
The commentary mentions the attraction of Saltburn for outdoor activities such as surfing, golf and walking. A map mounted on a wall shows Saltburn and the Valley Gardens. The film looks down on the oval lawn and plant bed, which is a feature of the Valley Gardens.
The next location shows two musicians playing guitars on the pier.
