Title: Sheep on the Fells at 1000 Feet
The film begins with a view across the hill, a small stone building in the middle distance and the remnants of snowfall in the foreground. Snow still covers part of the land. A flock of sheep shelter near a tree.
Title: Sheep Dipping in Weardale
A shepherd carrying a crook walks through rough grassland, followed by his sheepdog. A general view follows of sheep on a hillside, with the shepherd and his dog following the flock.
Views follow of the sheepdog at work, keeping the flock together. Another shepherd and his dog join in the work. The flock makes its way across a stone wall, the two shepherds and their dogs follow on. The flock makes its way downhill, through a gateway in a stone wall, followed by the shepherds.
The flock is now penned in, some sheep stand precariously on a nearby stone wall as the sheep dipping begins. Four children sit on a nearby fence watching the shepherds at work using their crooks to manoeuvre the sheep
The trough, set into concrete for dipping, has a notice attached to it which reads, ‘’Cooper’s Swim Bath’. The shepherd uses a broom to make sure each animal which goes through the dip one at a time, is completely immersed, before rejoining the flock.
Title: Sheepshearing in Weardale
Near the shelter of a stone wall, a group of shearers remove the wool from sheep. They work using hand shears, cutting carefully leaving a comparatively thin layer of wool on the sheep.
One of the shearers holds the head of sheep as he shows to the camera the now fully shorn animal he’s been working on.
Title: Chance – A Weardale Sheep Dog
A sheep dog stands on the top of a stone wall looking across the Weardale landscape.
Title: He Gathers Sheep And Drives Them Between Two Posts
A small flock of sheep in a field is approached slowly and carefully by the sheep dog. The sheep start to move and the dog follows. Dashing to and fro behind the flock, he guides them towards posts placed in the ground, and finally the sheep go between them. A closer view shows the dog do the same task again.
Title: Penning the sheep
The dog is put through its paces again. The shepherd watches over and guides the dog. The sheep enter the pen as the dog keeps guard and the shepherd ensures the sheep stay in the pen.
Again the dog is put to work under the guidance of the shepherd, three sheep guided between two posts.
Title: Separating A Selected Sheep
Again, three sheep are being guided by the shepherd and his dog. Eventually one of the sheep is separated from the other two.
The dog continues to work with a few more sheep, the dog stalks the sheep very slowly. Eventually one of the group is separated.
Next a flock of geese comes under scrutiny. The flock approaches an open farm gate, and the dog successfully guides them through.
The film ends with the shepherd and the dog together after demonstrating their hard work.
