The opening view of the film shows a glass beaker containing dark liquid on a table. A paper pointer or arrow placed on the table to the right of the beaker points to a laboratory Bunsen burner. A stylised picture of a burning flame follows next, the film then reveals it above a doorway to premises belonging to Northern Gas.
A diagram showing an outline of a factory building appears next. The word ‘plant’ appears beneath it. The words oil and water appear at the top right and bottom right of the diagram. Lines begin to link each word with the diagram. Another line appears labelled as ‘enriching gas’ the line continues and finishes with the words ‘town gas’ at the end.
The film then goes on to show several very large cylindrical gas holders, once familiar sites in towns and cities.
A new animated diagram shows a coloured square with the word ‘tank’ above it. Another square appears below and a line links up the tank with the new square representing a heater. A line from the heater links up with the words ‘S-Remover’ (sulphur remover).
The film moves back to the gas plant showing large pipes running between other sections of the plant. A view of a notice reads: ‘1 Petroleum Spirit highly inflammable’. The camera pulls back revealing that the words are printed on the side of a large petroleum storage tank.
Close up views follow of other sorts of vessels at the gas plant including ones which appear to be large stainless-steel tubes.
Going back to the most recent diagram an additional item shows the representation of a reforming tube operating at 800 degrees centigrade. A line representing a steam pipe runs from the S-Remover to a reforming tube.
The film moves back to general location views at the gas plant.
The film moves on to show a small observation window in one of the plant installations. The red glow of burning emanates from it, a closer view shows a fierce yellow flame. More general views follow of gas plant apparatus.
On the diagram seen earlier an additional item appears showing a CO → CO2 remover (Carbon Monoxide → Carbon Dioxide). From this a line leads to enriching gas, then odourising gas then town gas.
Views follow of long thin tubes of steel at the plant shown against a blue sky, these may be chimneys or ventilators. Other general views follow showing an array of polished steel plant.
