This is a film made by Derrick Walton of car and motorcycle events in Yorkshire and Morecombe: including a Driving Test Rally at Morecombe, a Yeadon Air Display, motorcycle racing at Scarborough and the Craven Motor Car Club treasure hunt.
The film opens with a programme for Driving Test Rally, Sunday, 20th March, 1955. A sports car, with a woman driving and man passenger, races around a bend, reverses into and out of a road going down to the beach at Morecombe, around a roundabout and off. This is followed by a Morris Minor and more cars doing likewise. The cars then take on more obstacles, with stewards observing. Some is filmed speeded up.
Then a programme is shown for Air Races and Air Pageant at Yeadon. Numerous old and new aircraft take –off and land, mostly light aircraft, some very small. This is followed by an air display, including a Percival Mew Gull, Procter, Sparrow jet, Chipmunk, Meteors display, Miles Gemini, Tiger Moth and glider, a Blackburn B2 all metal bi-plane, and a Sipa mini-jet. There is a large crowd in the stands, and some fun displays as well. A small girl sits on the grass eating a biscuit. A man spins the propeller of a plane to start it.
The film then switches to a road with cars being speeded up. A man comes out of his house, gets into his car and joins the traffic, filming from the front of the car, still speeded up. The car journeys through Silsden and Steeton and stops.
Then the film moves to motor cycle and sidecar racing at Scarborough, filmed at various places along the route. This is followed by the solo motorcycle racing. Spectators watch from the woods which align the track. Riders are then seen coming on to the track to line up for the following race. A woman sits on the grassy bank examining her programme. Again the race is filmed form various locations, with some of the bikes coming around tight bends being filmed in slow motion. The film switches between solo motorcycle racing and with sidecars. Spectators watch holding their programmes. The winner, number 41, does a lap with his winner’s garland, followed by the winners of the sidecar race, number 136.
Next there is a group around a motorcycle and sidecar, with a woman sat in the sidecar holding a baby. They are at the grass track motor cycle racing event at Craven, where a race is in progress. Then the riders are lined up for the next race. The scoreboard shows Lancashire with 70 points and Yorkshire with 74. Several starts are shown.
The film moves to a group of people gathered around a sidecar outside the Carleton Garages for the Craven Motor Car Club treasure hunt. They fill up with petrol and drive off, the first one a Triumph with a woman pillion and a sidecar. They pull up by the side of a country road near a village where a woman visits the Ladies public toilets. They are next seen clambering over rocks high up over the moors. There is another speeded up journey through a town, showing a stop watch with the ‘Official Time’ marked. People have gathered on the moors with their cars for a road event, again filmed from the front of a car speeded up, having to stop at a level crossing. The cars stop at a steward who makes notes before they set off again. A boy with a clipboard flags them down. They continue their journey and stop at Fewston. A steward puts a number 3 on one of the cars. The cars are shown being stopped by stewards at several locations and the film comes to an end.
