This is the seventh of a series of films made by Derrick Walton of his son, Adrian, from birth through childhood. This film covers Adrian’s 12th birthdays, a visit to the Keighley Worth Valley Railway, sledging, a school charity walk for Shelter, a women’s football match at Long Preston, and Keighley Gala.
The film begins at a steam locomotive event, with crowds milling around, and the family looking at a Gavioli fairground music organ. They then board a train, possibly the Keighley Worth Valley line. At the other end Adrian and Gillian have a candy floss each. Back home Adrian holds up a miniature garden grotto.
The film switches to the family up in a light aircraft with the family inside. Then back to Skipton, where Adrian and Gillian play a game of putting. Mrs Walton sits against a stone wall looking towards the sea with a road behind her, and then she plays ball, piggy-in-the-middle, with Gillian and Adrian. There is a harbour with some small boats, and then they are looking around an outdoor market. They are then at an outdoor market, looking around various stalls, including one for plants owned by A E Oliver & son, and with chickens being sold from the back of a van.
Next there are the cards for Adrian’s 12th birthday are on display. Adrian is in the back garden with his friends playing with a bow and arrow. They are then indoors sat around the dining table tucking into the birthday food of cakes, pork pies and sausages on sticks. Adrian lights and blows out the candles on his birthday cake.
The film switches to Adrian’s gran on a train, before quickly switching to filming from on board a boat ride along a water track at a fairground. Next Adrian is pulling his sister around on a sledge in the back garden in the snow, before she falls off. He and his friends pull their sledges along the road and up the hill overlooking Skipton, where they go down the hill, with film of the ride form on board a sledge.
There is then a group of boys, including Adrian and his sister, on a walk for Shelter, along the banks of a river. They stop at one point whilst a steward marks their cards. They continue along a road, stopping at Carleton village centre, before walking along a snow lined country road. They arrive at the end of the walk, at Skipton Grammar School, where they hand in their forms and get a cup of tea.
The film switches to a women’s football match taking place at Long Preston, outside the Maypole Hotel, with stalls and a traction display. The film then switches to the Keighley Gala passing the Cavendish Hotel, with the Gala Queen, a locomotive on the back of an articulated lorry with a plate for Worth Valley Railway on it, scouts, vintage cars, majorettes, and finishing with a Highland band.
