Title - Ministry of Home Security Training Film
Life Saving First Aid
Produced by Cinit Films
Title - We may not all be qualified first-aiders. But we should all know certain simple essentials of first aid - for example, the methods of stopping sever bleeding and of applying artificial respiration - which if promptly and properly applied may save life.
Title - The Brown family takes a Sunday afternoon walk.
Title - Likewise the Jones family.
The film opens with the intertitles that suggest we should all know something about first aid. Two families, the Browns and the Jones are out for a walk when a plane drops a bomb on the road. The film shows how Mr Brown and Mr Jones react to their daughters being injured.
Title - Mr. Jones understands simple first aid and keeps his head. He does not move the patient, but stops oncoming traffic and controls the bleeding on the spot.
The film shows the consequences of different reactions. One man simply moves the girl to the side of the road, and she dies. The other applies simple first aid, and the girl survives.
Title - Everyone should know the elementary treatment of: 1) Severe bleeding 2) Shock 3) Suffocation 4) Burns 5) Gas Poisoning 6) Fractures
Title - Bleeding - severe bleeding must at once be dealt with, otherwise it may quickly prove fatal.
In most cases, bleeding is best stopped by at once applying to the wound a clean pad of folded cloth (eg a clean handkerchief) and bandaging tightly.
Bandages are best made from triangles of cloth formed by cutting diagonally a square of clean cloth with sides about 40 inches long.
This intertitle is followed by a demonstration of the actions described.
Title - Folded twice, the triangle makes a broad bandage.
Folded three times the triangle makes a narrow bandage, which is easily made into a pad.
Bleeding can be lessened by getting the patients to sit down or preferably to lie down. If possible, the affected part should be raised above the level of the heart.
A man has an injured leg, and another man applies a bandage in first aid. His leg is raised above the level of his heart.
Title - Reef knots (which do not slip) but always be used in tying bandages, and the ends of the bandage should be tucked in.
Until a pad and bandage can be applied, bleeding should be controlled by direct pressure on the wound with a clean hand or finger. In many case, the patient can do this himself.
This intertitle is followed by a demonstration of the actions described.
Title - If a clean pad is not available, it is a good plan to put a layer of clean paper (eg tissue paper or note paper or the inside of an envelope) between the wound and the pad or bandage.
Title - Bleeding from the palm of the hand can be stopped by closing the hand round a clean pad and bandaging firmly.
This intertitle is followed by a demonstration of the actions described.
Title- When bleeding is from a wound in or across the stomach, the knees should be raised up, and if there is no protrusion of internal organs, the wound should be covered with a dry dressing or a clean towel or sheet.
Title - If there is a protrusion of internal organs, the dressing should first be rinsed through a warm solution of salt and water (1 teaspoon to a pint of water.)
These intertitles are followed by a demonstration of the actions described.
Title - Gentle but firm pressure should be kept on the dressing until help arrives and the wound can be bandaged up.
Title - If an abdominal wound runs lengthwise, and there is no protrusion of internal organs, the legs must be kept straight.
Here the film ends abruptly.
