A film in four parts that shows the construction of Gas Holders in Scotland with the steel and iron materials that are made at Newton Chambers factory in Sheffield. It was filmed by a professional unit so involves many advanced shots of the process.
Title - Erection of bottom lift.
The opening sequence in this film shows several workman at the very top of the 2 mill cu.ft gas holder attaching steel girders together using red hot rivets, which are then knocked into place by a pneumatic hammer....

Title - Erection of bottom lift.
The opening sequence in this film shows several workman at the very top of the 2 mill cu.ft gas holder attaching steel girders together using red hot rivets, which are then knocked into place by a pneumatic hammer. The filmmaker then captures various shots of the structures roof, and in the background, Sheffield the skyline can be seen.
Title - Electrical welding guide rail ends.
Still on the roof of the gas holder, a workman welds the ends of two guide rails together, before a man with an electric filler smoothes the rough metal down. The filmmaker captures both interior and exterior shots of the nearly finished gas holder. Cutting to the roof, a lingering view shows the finished roof.
Title - Guide carriages.
In this sequence there is a melange of close up shots which show the guide carriages for the gas holder lifts in considerable detail.
Title - Lift stairways.
A metal grid of girders (the lift stairway) has been erected on the roof of the gas holder, and several men work on the different levels of the grid. A wide exterior shot of the gas holder displays the impressive height the men are working at. The final shot shows the complete lift stairways finished.
Title - Filling tank with 4 million gallons of water.
In a warehouse, a workman turns on a large tap. The camera then follows the hose as it travels up the stairs of the gas holder to the roof, where the hose nozzle directs water into the container.
Title - Steam supply pipe for de-icing.
An expansive view shows the countryside and hills that surround the area, before the filmmaker cuts to show the steam supply pipe that resides on the roof.
Title - Air blower and seal box to allow entry by inlet main.
The filmmaker captures shots of the air blower and a large ribbed pipe which leads into the gas holder. There is then a close up of the lift mechanism which is in operation. The gas holder is now complete and the exterior is shown as workers abseil from the roof painting the structure white.
Title - Purging machine.
A purging machine sits idle in a warehouse. The dials and various operational controls are shown carefully captured.
Title - Holder completed September 1952.
The final shot of this film shows the exterior of the completed gas holder from a ground position.
