One of two films in the collection featuring Seebohm Rowntree, this film captures Rowntree, his family, and his friends on holiday in Argentina, and Germany, passing through Harwich. It shows a train journey in Argentina and the journey by ship, a weekend in Orpington, a holiday in Dusseldorf, and skiing in Winterberg.
The film begins with a man swimming in a lake, followed by two men trying to stroke a tethered cow. A train arrives at a large railway terminal, followed by a Central Argentina train travelling at speed. Then a small girl is riding in a toy car, and a boy stands by a garden gate. Cattle are herded across a river on horseback.
The film then switches to a city, presumably in Argentina, where there are shops with signs in Spanish, and a street with cars, horse drawn carts and trams. At one point, the film runs backwards. Pedestrians walk around a street corner.
On board the deck of a ship, a man plays with a baby mongoose on a leash and a baby monkey. Several women sit on the deck sewing and generally larking about. They are joined by some men as well, and they all go swimming. Back on deck, a man who is holding a cine camera is filmed, and is in turn, filming the cameraman. The group of people relax on the deck; one man holds a cine camera while wearing a very pointed sombrero. Another woman has a laugh with a silly hat. The group plays a game of shuffleboard, and included is some trick photography which seems to make the events run in reverse.
A man, Seebohm Rowntree, walks across the lawn of a detached house towards the camera. There a couple of brief scenes from the streets of York before watching several monkeys in a monkey house. Back at the house, Seebohm Rowntree and his wife depart in their car, and a large house can be seen across some fields.
Inertitle: 'A weekend at Orpington'
A small boy plays in a garden with his mother, with a wooden horse on wheels, and with a dog. They are joined by others who play with the dog as well.
Inertitle: 'Leaving England once again, sailing down the river at Harwich'
A long line of boats leave the port, and the family travels by boat along the coast. The ship follows a light aircraft which takes off from the water.
Inertitle: 'A hunting weekend in the Eifel'
From high up, a village can be seen nestled in a valley.
Inertitle: 'The party sets off'
Four men with rifles, accompanied by a woman and a dog, set off.
Inertitle: 'Dusseldorf on the Rhine'
A street in Dusseldorf is shown from a bridge going over the Rhine, and then more city centre streets with the Cathedral in the background. There is a market in the square. A boat is tugged along a wide section of river with a bridge, and there are some street scenes with a car going through an arch. Filmed from the front of a car, the travellers pass down a city street and into the countryside. Men play a game of football in the snow. One team is in white, and the other in black. Next a carnival is processes through the city centre. The procession includes horse drawn carriages, people in historic costume and bands which are all watched by a large crowd. There are many impressive floats, costumes, and dancing.
Inertitles: 'Winter Sports in Winterberg' `Panorama of the Sauerland from the Astenberg Tower'
The camera pans around 360? to show an impressive wintery landscape. Some skiers make their way down a snow slope.
Inertitles: 'Handing over the `baton' in the long distance race'
A large group of skiers have assembled, and they set off one at a time on a race.
Inertitles: 'Bad conditions force the Bobs to run slowly.'
The film shows a part of a two-man bobsleigh race before returning to some old back streets of the city and a beautiful old square of timber framed buildings with a fountain in the middle. There are more views across the town and the surrounding countryside. Some ducks walk across a frozen pond, and the film comes to an end.
