Following the intro is an opening title - Using Self Rescuers
Using footage of fires and emergency rescues from coal mines, a narrator explains that deaths by carbon monoxide poisoning are too high for miners.
Introducing the Self Rescuer, a miner demonstrates how it should be placed over the head and used correctly.
In a coal pit, the film dramatises the difference of using the Self Rescuer or not in a fire. The miner who doesn't wear his is brought out dead, while those who followed procedure came out ok. It is explained what it would feel like to wear a Self Rescuer in hot humid conditions, and how to notice any problems with it. The machines are continuously monitored.
