1. Southampton Docks (1962)
The date given is 1962 which was late in the day both as regards extensive steam working on British Railways and Southampton Docks as a major port for trans-Atlantic shipping traffic. By this point trans-Atlantic shipping was rapidly succumbing to jet airliners which were first introduced four years earlier in 1958.
The film opens with a general view of Southampton Docks with a 1940s American-built (USA class) 0-6-0T shunting. Another classmate is also visible. A British Railways Standard Class 5 4-6-0 No.73089 comes into view hauling distinctive Bulleid passenger stock (in green livery). An ex-London Brighton & South Coast Railway Class E2 0-6-0T is visible, while a much older ex-Brighton Class E1 0-6-0T hauls some wagons in the foreground. Three different classes of 0-6-0T are then seen together, E1, E2 (with extended side tanks) and USA, the latter having its tanks filled. 73089 reverses past the camera, and the USA 0-6-0T moves forward. Another USA tank shunts vans past a Ford Popular saloon, and then reverses back toward a dock crane.
Different views of the RMS Queen Elizabeth can be seen including the stern as well as a side view showing the gang plank, a funnel, and then the bow bearing the name. The E2 now moves forward with a train of wagons but then reverses with a formation of vans. Southern Bulleid 'Battle of Britain' class 4-6-2 No.34063 229 Squadron sets off below large building with luggage van behind tender. Grimy Maunsell Class N15 ('King Arthur') 4-6-0 No.30789 Sir Guy moves past. USA tank No.30071 passes with a wagon and then reverses with the Queen Elizabeth towering in the background. 'West Country' 4-6-2 No.34043 Combe Martin departs, visibly slipping, while a USA tank approaches the Ocean Terminal with vans. Clean USA 30074 passes, then grimy sister engines 30069 and 30067 are seen. END
2. Nine Elms (1961?)
On approaches to Waterloo Station ex-Southern Railway Maunsell 'Lord Nelson' class 4-cylinder 4-6-0 No.30863 Lord Rodney (retaining original cylinders) reverses rapidly towards Clapham Junction signal box astride track. The following sequences are at Nine Elms depot where an engineman is seen walking past the shed pilot. Ex-London Brighton & South Coast Railway Class E4 0-6-2T No.32472, moves up behind ex-South Eastern & Chatham Railway Class H 0-4-4T No.31326, an unidentifiable ex-LB & SCR E2 0-6-0T (1913 series, short side tanks), and ex-SE & CR Class L 4-4-0 No.31768 which are not in steam. The 0-6-2T reverses and pulls these locomotives, and there are a close up details of the elegant 1914-built 4-4-0. Close up of BR Standard Class 5 4-6-0 No.73081, showing nameplate Excalibur, formerly carried by Urie Class N15 4-6-0 No.30736 (withdrawn November 1956) from which it was fitted in February 1961. Dirty ex-SR Maunsell Class V 'Schools' 3-cylinder 4-4-0 No.30937 Epsom, with large diameter chimney for its Lemaitre exhaust, reverses. There is a close up of cab with engine crew and its brass nameplate. 30937 moves forward, and an ex-SR 3-cylinder Class U1 2-6-0 is visible in the background. An ex-SE & CR Class C 0-6-0 No. 31271 reverses. The clean rebuilt Bulleid 'Merchant Navy' 4-6-2 No.35019 French Line CGT is seen on the shed turntable, with modern blocks of flats behind. It moves forward off turntable while another rebuilt 'MN', No.35003 Royal Mail, is seen moving. Followed by 35019 again, its large 6000 gallon tender now apparent. Rebuilt 'BB' No.34077 603 Squadron stands en echelon with the two rebuilt 'MN' 4-6-2s, and is then seen in close up with the boiler being 'blown down'. The sequence closes with 0-6-2T No.32472 which reverses under the Clapham Junction signal box. END
Historical note: The Nine Elms footage is presumed to be dated 1961 in view of the appearance of 73081 carrying nameplates, fitted only early that year, and the appearance of the Class L 4-4-0 which became extinct later in 1961.
3. Brighton (1958)
Note: This footage is almost all presumed to be dated 13 April 1958, when the last surviving Brighton 'Atlantic' made its final celebratory run between London (Victoria) and Newhaven Harbour on 'The Sussex Coast Limited.' It was organised by the Railway Correspondence & Travel Society.
The sequence actually starts with ex LB & SCR Class A1x ('Terrier') 0-6-0T No.32640 coming off the Hayling Island branch near Havant, while sister engine No.32636 is seen at rest. The main sequence begins with Maunsell Class N15 4-6-0 No.3080? with six-wheel tender entering Brighton Station, where No.30796 Sir Dodinas le Savage (also with six-wheel tender) is already waiting. (Both were originally built in 1926 with 'short' tenders for the Brighton Section. The section was later electrified on 1 January 1933). No.30796 departs with a Maunsell flat-sided vehicle in green livery (?) behind the tender followed by five spotless BR Mk 1 carriages in crimson and cream. Very clean BR Standard Class 4 2-6-4T No.80154 (the last steam locomotive to be built at Brighton, March 1957) is seen entering the station with RCTS (Railway Correspondence & Travel Society) headboard. It was the only member of the class to be turned out new with the 1956 British Transport Commission roundel. We then see No.80153, also very clean and sporting the 1949 'lion and wheel' device, passing the grim shell of the recently closed Brighton locomotive works. Both engines had been built there only a year earlier.
Ex-LB & SCR Class H2 4-4-2 No.32424 Beachy Head with RCTS headboard passes through Newhaven Station and is then seen reversing its train. This is followed by a close up of the cab with its crew. The brass nameplate is seen in close up, before the engine runs forward light engine to Newhaven shed, with a bowler-hatted locomotive inspector in the cab. This is the end of the final run by a British 4-4-2 on 13 April 1958.
At the Brighton shed yard of Stroudley 'Terrier' 0-6-0T DS377 Brighton Works, details of the yard are documented as well as complete loco, ex-London & South Western Railway 4-4-0 No.563 as originally restored in 1948. END
4. Brockenhust/Lymington branch (?) (early 1960s)
This is a brief sequence showing an ex-London & South western Railway Drummond Class M7 0-4-4T engaged in branch line push/pull working. There is no positive identification of the location, which could have been either Wareham/Swanage or Brockenhurst/Lymington, on both of which M7 working ceased in early 1964. Brockenhurst/Lymington appears more likely.
Ex-LSWR M7 0-4-4T No.30048 approaches on a two coach train and is then seen reversing. The driver is in driving compartment of rear carriage. The rebuilt 'MN' 4-6-2 No.35004 Cunard White Star passes through main line station on up express followed by rebuilt 'WC' 4-6-2 No.34032 Camelford on a down train. Ex-SR Maunsell class S15 4-6-0 No.30830 (Urie tender) enters station on down passenger train and then departs. Another Maunsell S15, No.30842(?) (flat-sided Maunsell tender) arrives on up passenger train (freezes). END
5. The rest of the film is made up of very brief scenes which include the following:
A. Swiss Federal Railways. Narrow gauge van on flat wagon.
B. Cromford & High Peak Railway. Unidentified ex-Ministry of Supply 'Austerity' (LNER Class J94) hauls steel mineral wagons.
C. BR Standard Class 4 2-6-4T No.80153 manouvres at Brighton. Out-take from Brighton 1958 (above).
D. Temple Meads Station, Bristol. A 'Castle' 4-6-0 departs on the up 'Bristolian', stock in all crimson rather than WR regional livery. Also seen, 'Hall' 4-6-0, ex-LMS type 8F 2-8-0 No.48450, and BR standard Class 4 4-6-0 No.75009.
E. Tralee & Dingle Railway. Narrow gauge, Irish Republic. 2-6-0T hauls goods train alongside road.
F. Vale of Rheidol Railway. Narrow gauge, Wales. 2-6-2T on passenger train. No.7 seen reversing.
G. Ex-Midland Railway Class 3F 0-6-0T No.47218 with condensing gear. Close up of boiler details.
H. Lickey Incline, near Bromsgrove. Train locomotive not visible, freight train ascends banked by two WR 94xx 0-6-0PTs. No.8402 moves alongside Bromsgrove coaling stage.
I. Ex-MR 2F 0-6-0 (unidentifiable) stands by platform. Close up of Ross 'pop' safety valves blowing off. MR power classification metal '2' still visible on cabside.
J. Ex-Southern Bulleid Class Q1 0-6-0 No.33001 (now preserved in National Collection at York) being turned on a vacuum operated turntable, location not known.
K. Unidentified model railway. GWR 4-6-0 and train pass over Brunel timber viaduct, auto train, 0-4-2T on push/pull, 2-4-0 on two coach train, 2-8-0 on freight.
L. GWR Small Prairie Tanks.No.4501, in close up, then reverses with vans. No.5558 with larger tanks comes into station. Location unknown.
M. Newcastle Central Station pilot. NER-type Class J72 0-6-0T No.68723 shunts as station pilot. Specially accorded apple green livery with BR and NER crests, this therefore probably dates c.1960.
N. Grimy ex-GWR 0-4-2T No.1456 simmers in station. Driver oils motion.
O. Unusual signal reverts to danger. (Nationality not known)
P. Ex-NER Class J21 0-6-0 No.65033 (now preserved at Beamish) very clean at Newcastle Central Station. Crew in cab, then engine reverses through Manors Station. Probably same day/date as M.
Q. Ex-Tralee & Dingle 2-6-0T No.4 derelict on shed, being examined by PBW (?). Ex- Cavan & Leitrim 4-4-0T No.2, PBW (?) opens smokebox door. View showing both engines. Probably late 1950s.
R. Ex-Somerset & Dorset 2-8-0 No.53807 (now preserved) approaches on freight. Close up of motion, and Whitaker tablet catcher is clearly visible on side of tender.
S. Fort William. Station, then quayside with seagulls. Spotless (nameless) ex-Great Northern Class K2 2-6-0 No.61784, with side window cab, departs with train for Mallaig. View from footplate approaching small station, probably Banavie, in view of fishing boats then seen in passing. Another footplate view, then concrete viaduct. Enters Glenfinnan Station, passes through short rock cuttings, over viaduct, sinuous curves. Passes close to sea shore, then approaches Mallaig. People mill about in front of station, with locomotive (K2?) beyond. Passengers embark on Skye ferry Loch Seaforth.
