This documentary uses archive film footage from the Imperial War Museum intercut with interviews with Commonwealth Troops Second World War Veterans who fought for the Allies during World War II. The men are members of the Sangat Centre in Ilkley, and this film was a visual document of a reminiscence project that was held there. Each man is given a chance to express his view. Some of the men have an interpreter to help them tell their story.
The film uses footage from Burma, India and Japan and shows the realities of the life that the soldiers had to endure such as lack of food, hot weather, bugs and warfare. The men visit Leeds Royal Armouries where they pick up some of the weapons that they used for the first time in 60 Years.
The men talk candidly about their experiences, their fighting, as well as what they could do in their free time.
The film has the following chapters for people to look at:
The War in the East
Climate Conditions Army Life
Machinery of War
Into Action
Fall of Singapore
Personal Stories
Coming Home
The first chapter shows a Remembrance Day ceremony in 2005. A brass band play the song, "It's A Long to Tipperary." IWM footage then shows scenes from the war in the Far East. The men are interviewed at the Sangat Centre. Each experience which is mentioned, such as living conditions, training, walking through the jungle, is coupled with footage that illustrates their commentary.
The men also visit the Leeds Royal Armouries where they handle many of the weapons that they would have used to fight the Allied enemies during the war. Various voiceovers provide commentary about how they were used and how the men feel about coming into contact with these weapons again.
Later the men go back to the centre and discuss how they moved to Britain. They talk about how different they found British society and their experiences of integrating. The overall feeling of the film is that these men took great pride in being on the side of the Allies and helping in the war effort as their participation was crucial in helping win the Second World War.
