This film is partly Movietone News. This was a newsreel produced by Twentieth Century Fox and was fairly recent prior to this film with this being produced in 1928 in America and a British version in 1929. Newsreels like these were made to inform people of current events but also record these important events for later.
However, the film also has footage filmed by W.A Worsley. Worsley was a distant relative of the Windsor family and also a British cricketer. He has created several films that the archive now holds. Many of these focus on the village of Hovingham. The Worsleys owned a large manor in this area called Hovingham Hall and perhaps would have been where Wolsey grew up. Similar to the Moveitone News, the film was made to record an important moment but perhaps also a personal one. The film itself shows the celebrations of the jubilee of George V. The concept of jubilees have been a concept for centuries, used to celebrate the rule of the Pope. Royal jubilees started in the reign of George III, who was known for his involvement in the American Revolution. Jubilees were used to celebrate how long the monarch had ruled. George V had ruled for twenty-five years, making 1935 the time of his Silver Jubilee. He was the son of Albert, one of Queen Victoria’s children. During the first World War, he made many visits to the battlefield. He was also the monarch to change the family name to Windsor. He died shortly after his jubilee in 1936. His son, George VI, followed after his brother abdicated and then followed Queen Elizabeth II who celebrated her diamond jubilee in 2012. The film contains a number of high rank personal. It includes the prime minster, Ramsay MacDonald. He was a member of the Labour party. A few months after the jubilee, MacDonald ended up resigning and Stanley Baldwin, who was a Conservative, took over. The ceremony is also held at St Paul’s Cathedral. This is a popular landmark in London but also has been long associated with the royal family with the jubilee of Queen Victoria being held there and decades later would hold the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. The film also shows how the celebration of a jubilee was very much a public affair. Crowds gathered on the streets, all over the country. Street parties were also held. This brought a sense of hope and joy during a time where the UK was in a state of recovery with the war and the economy.
