A wooden roadside sign for the Dukeshouse Wood Camp School. A group of boys walk along a country road into a wood past bare autumnal trees. The boys follow a path through the woods standing under a large conifer tree. They continue their walk along a muddy track before coming down a slope to a river with a steep rocky cliff face on the other side of the water. The boys then climb a steep muddy slope leading away from the river and scramble through leaves to reach the top of a hillock.
At the Dukeshouse School, a man walks past the camera. General views of sports fields and wooden barrack buildings on the site. Inside one of the buildings lines of bunk beds set up along the wall. Outside again a number of barracks surround two sides of a grass area in front of which a school building.
Beside one of the barracks, a group of schoolboys walk away in pairs. In a field they work together to erect a number of tents. A tin caddy sits on grill over a pit fire, nearby a boy uses a spade to dig a hole. A man speaks briefly, and two boys sit around the fire, a third boy comes over and joins them.
A group of boys climb aboard a bus changes to them climbing over a stone wall. The boys walk or climb over the remains of Hadrian’s Wall which snakes across and over Crag Lough, the inland lake in the distance. They look around the remains of a Roman building, possibly Milecastle 39. Standing on a wall a man speaks to the group using a long stick to point things out. From the top of Crag Lough a view across the rough moorland to the north.
The group walk across moorland, a dog runs towards camera. A stream leading down to Crag Lough itself followed by views around the lake and back towards the Crag. Two horses come over to look at the camera, the group use a stile to climb over a wooden fence. On the other side the remains of Housesteads Roman Fort.
Back at Dukeshouse School a boy scrubs the bottom of a swimming pool with a brush, another boy throws water onto it. Now full, boy swim and splash about in the pool. Several dive into the pool watched by others standing beside the pool.
Beside a jetty on a river or lake three green canoes and two boys unload lifejackets from the back of a van. On the water several two-manned canoes with one boat paddling past at speed. A single-manned canoe paddles past several times before the occupant deliberately flipping it 180 degrees.
A man puts a canoe into the pool at Dukeshouse School. A group of men and women stand around the edge as he gives a demonstration about getting into it. Now aboard he paddles around the pool back-and-forth and side-to-side. He gives a demonstration of a controlled roll taking several seconds before coming to the surface. The film changes to another day with a different man in a canoe in the pool paddling up and down.
The film ends on the River Tyne during winter with snow on the ground along the shoreline. The camera pans to the Hexham Bridge where the river flowing over a wear that forms part of the bridge.
