Intertitle: 'Carnival Time 12th July 1980' A Carnival taking place in Crossgates field has a fancy dress competition (won by someone dressed as a camel). Susan Knight, the Carnival Queen, tours the site. This is followed by a demonstration by North Yorkshire Police dogs. There is a procession of Carnival floats, 25 in all, including a Wizard the Oz float (coming 2nd), Tetley's dray horses, and the winning Middleton entry of Stephenson's Rocket. Next is a competition of decorated cycles. £1,000 is raised for local charities. Intertitle: 'New Garden Centre Opens 13th September 1980' The well-known gardening firm of R. V. Roger close their town shop and open up a garden centre at their Malton Road nurseries. Customers look around the outside and in the greenhouse. Intertitle: 'Pickering Honours Green Howards' On the 3rd April 1981, Pickering has a day honouring The Green Howards Regiment. The commentary states that many local boys were territorials and went straight into the thick of fighting when the last war broke out. The troops, inspected by the Mayor, parade through town accompanied by veterans and a marching military band. The Town Council decided to have a Roll of Honour, and the Green Howards were the first to be placed on it. They are presented with a scroll by the Town Council. Intertitle: 'Christian Aid Lunch 13 April 1981' There is a gathering of all denominations of church people, including the Mayor, at the 'Over 60's Club' in Hewgate, who meet for lunch. As a result £159 is raised for Christian Aid. Intertitle: 'Thornton Dale Show August 1981' Thousands of local people are attending the annual agricultural show. There are competitions of ponies, bulls and calves, and a parade of horse-drawn carriages which is led by the Samuel Smith Brewery dray. Intertitle: 'Liberal President's Visit 13th March 1982' Mr. Viv Bingham, the Liberal President, visits Mr. and Mrs. Colin Wright at their farm in Thornton-le-Dale. He then goes on to the Liberal Club at Pickering for tea. Liberal Party members, including the local Liberal prospective candidate, gather outside the Liberal Club. Intertitle: 'Toc H Clothing Sale 14th June 1982' An open-air clothing sale given by Pickering Toc H (a Christian charitable organization). Local people inspect the items on display at the various stalls, mostly clothes. £240 is raised. Intertitle: 'Big Police Manhunt 26th June' 200 officers conduct a large police hunt for a man who has killed two people including a Malton Police sergeant. The hunt turns to Dolby Forest, and a helicopter flies overhead. Eventually the police catch up with the killer, Barrie Prudom, who refuses to give himself up and is eventually shot dead. Intertitle: 'Pickering TV Star 9th July 1982' An interview with Dorothy Sleightholme, the presenter of Yorkshire TV Farmhouse Kitchen programmes, takes place in her garden. Dorothy is asked several questions, such as how many people the programme gets out to. The End
