A film made by local filmmaker Ernest Taylor, of the Huddersfield Cine Club, about a visit to Huddersfield by Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh in July 1949. (Colour) Title: 'Huddersfield's Welcome to H.R.H. Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh July 26th 1949' A train pulled by two steam engines passes through a Station with the clock showing 9.15. A group of onlookers wave from the platform. A large number of women in a blue uniforms make their way through the town centre. There is also a banner across a street proclaiming, 'Welcome to Huddersfield'. A large crowd has turned out for the event and line the streets of Huddersfield. A woman holds up a pair of small Union Jack flags which are being sold on the streets by a salesman, and a group of nurses are standing outside in the sun waving. There are many police marshalling the crowds which are shown in various places in the city centre. A woman is being carried off by two members of the St John Ambulance Brigade, and another by two policemen. A mace bearer descends some red carpeted stairs and then the cavalcade draws up with an army unit waiting in salute. Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh stand to attention before meeting the Mayor and dignitaries, and Princess Elizabeth is given a bouquet. The Duke of Edinburgh makes an inspection of the troops, and the Royal couple make their way up the steps of the Town Hall and wave from the balcony. Below the army unit present arms. (Black and White) There is a group of Army Servicemen standing at ease by the roadside. A small parade is followed by some uniformed men posing for the camera in front of the chauffer driven cars. A crowd of people line a street opposite a building where the Royal couple are standing by a window. They exit the building and get into the waiting car. (Colour) The film switches again to colour at Micklegate Bar, York, and a view of the York Minster from the city wall near the railway station. There are also more scenes at the river and more shots of the Cathedral with a group of scouts outside. This is followed by many of the other well known sites in York including St William's College, the Treasurer's House, St Michael le Belfry, the Minster Caf?, Goodramgate, 'Ye Olde Cake Shoppe', with schoolboys looking in the window, Mansion House, and then Stonegate with a man poised to ring a bell attached to a wall. There is then further film of the city walls and city centre, including a York ambulance pulling up to collect someone lying on the pavement. At a large house, a family sits in the garden. This is followed by another country style house and what might be the Huddersfield Cine Club posing with their cameras. Next a group of people are swimming in a large outdoor pool, followed by a sports event in a field, possibly a school sports day, including a long distance race and a relay. A sizeable crowd watches from a stand on the side. Prizes are handed out at the end.
