Title - Around the Town
Aug 7 Halifax Show at Shibden Park
A signpost is set up in the park with many pointers directing to the many different tents and events set up for the show. There are local companies in attendance and setting up stands including the North East Gas Board, the Yorkshire Electricity Board, and Whitakers Beer of Halifax.
Inside the main tent, the organizers of the event have gathered for speeches and the formal opening of the show. One of the ladies speaking receives a large bouquet of flowers as the crowd applauds. Additionally, there are many large displays set up inside the main tent made up of a variety of flowers, cacti, and fruits and vegetables.
In the open section of the park, the livestock showings begin. The goats are the first to be judged. After the farmers have groomed and prepped the animals, the animals are taken around a circle and put on display for the judges. Horses are shown next, and the farmers also groom them before they are shown. Some farmers even go as far as to braid the horses' manes working in different decorations as an extra special look for the competition. There are many animal shows throughout the day including competitions for cows, a wide variety of dog breeds, as well as birds, rabbits, and guinea pigs. A few of the prize-winners are shown at the end.
It begins to rain, and in order to avoid the weather, much of the crowd makes their way under the large tents. Some luckily have umbrellas, while others merely use newspapers to shield themselves from the rain. When the sunshine returns, some of the younger children in attendance head towards the candy floss machine, while others prefer an ice cream treat. The film closes with a horse jumping competition and a brief shot of one of the winners walking away with his trophy.
