Description
This film documents a construction site in either North Africa or India.
In the opening shot the camera pans across the sea to reveal a stretch of land under construction. Many people work away to excavate earth, and there are large bits of machinery in the background. This film documents a construction site in either North Africa or India.
In the opening shot the camera pans across the sea to reveal a stretch of land under construction. Many people work away to excavate earth, and there are large bits of machinery in the background. Several workers drill and hack away at a large piece of rock. Lots of workers hack the soil with pickaxes, and workers carry heavy bags of earth. Two men chip away at a large rock; the first man uses a hammer to hit a chisel, which another man moves into a new position after every hit. Next there is a shot of a hole being filled with water, and as the camera tilts up, the filmmaker shows that water is coming from a long pipe that stretches over a hill. Following this there is a shot of lots of workers as they hack away at the earth, and then removing it from the site.
A man operates some kind of wheel driven pump, which could possibly provide the pressure that carries the water into the hole. The machine expels a lot of compressed air. One man searches through the rocks, while another carries rocks in a basket, which rests on his back. The filmmaker then shows an expansive view of the construction site, capturing lots of workers hacking at the earth and transporting it away. The final shot in this sequence shows water coming out of the pipe and filling up the hole, which is then followed by a shot of three men walking towards the camera carrying earth.
Lots of men stand around a large cement mixer, which lifts an auxiliary container to the mixer and slides the contents inside. A man stands on top of the cement mixer watching this process. A very large number of men work have gathered around a railway track; unsettling the earth and carrying it away. Two men measure out a wooden beam that is part of a small wooden frame, while two other men measure a length of string, and another man clambers across the wooden frame. The filmmaker then cuts to a man using a piece of wood to smooth down something within the wooden framework. The next shot shows the opposite side of the cement mixer, where cement slides out and down a ramp into a large container. The cement is then tipped out of the container, and into a hole. Several men smooth out the cement and remove the excess.
The filmmaker utilises a slow sweeping panning shot showing a long stone wall, which a large workforce are busily building. In the foreground, workers walk past the camera carrying rocks and earth balanced on their heads, while in the background, other workers split rocks with axes. The following shot shows a group of men moving rocks into position on top of the wall. A British engineer, dressed all in white with a large sun hat, walks towards the camera using a cane, while in his other hand he holds a cigarette. Following this, a man tips a clump of cement onto the wall. Next, several workers position the rocks on the wall, and knock them into place with hammers.
A large boulder suspended by metal chains is lowered onto the wall, and two men guide it into place. The British engineer stands over several workmen as they add new rocks to the wall. In the final shots of this sequence, the British engineer and two other senior workers stand in a row posing for the camera. Several men add a new layer of cement to the wall, and then move a large stone onto the cement. A man then presses down hard on the rock so it sinks in firmly. In the final shot of this sequence, three workers line up for the camera, they wear all white clothing and head scarfs- one man carries a satchel of some sort.
A bucket, which is attached to a mechanical digger, deposits earth onto an already large earth mound. In the shots that follow, the diggers bucket scoops up earth and transfers it onto the earth mound. A cathedral and several houses are visible in the background as the digger drives forward. The filmmaker then cuts to another shot of the digger driving forward, this time however there are two men on board as the driver operates the digger arm. The bucket and driver come extremely close to camera as they move past. The final shot shows the digger rotating, while scooping up and depositing earth. This is possibly footage of a testing sight in Lincoln.
