This film documents a number of Christmas activities and events in the Sheffield area from 1959-1964. Included is footage of Christmas displays in the city centre, Santa visiting a house and delivering presents, and family holiday celebrations.
The film opens in the city centre, and all the buildings have been decorated for the Christmas holiday. As it gets dark, the decorations become illuminated. The side of a building is covered in illuminated adverts for products like Guinness, BP, and Coca Cola. There is also a large Christmas tree positioned next to a fountain and covered with lights. More footage follows of other adverts as well as a few shop window displays.
The next scene begins inside a house. Santa comes through the front door and makes his way into the living room. He is carrying a sack filled with toys, and a Golliwogg can be seen sticking out the top of the sack. While in the lounge, he helps himself to a glass of spirits. There is a small Christmas tree on a table beside the drinks tray. Santa makes his way upstairs into one of the bedrooms. Here he hangs filled stockings on the end of the bed and lays out some gifts as well. Back downstairs, he enters the dining room and helps himself to a cup of tea which has been set out.
Christmas morning, and the family fills the living room. Two small children open their Christmas gifts, and older members of the family are seated around the room. After opening their gifts, the children hand out presents to other members of the family. One couple receive a picnic basket complete with dining accessories. The little girl plays with her doll while the grandmother opens her gift, a new toaster.
Santa stands at the door of a caravan, and a girl and her mother stand in the doorway. He delivers gifts to the household and stands and chats. He goes onto hand out more gifts to others around the caravan estate. It's dark, and some of the shots are underexposed. One of the families invites Santa into their home to have a drink. He, along with two women and another man, raise their drinks in a cheers towards the camera.
In the next portion of the film, a family is seated around a table. They hold up their drinks and cheers to the camera. The table is decorated with all the fixings for Christmas dinner, and the father brings out the turkey to all those eagerly waiting at the table. Later, Santa arrives and brings many gifts. After dinner, different members of the family dance in the living room. They are dancing to both slow and fast-paced music, and the room is decorated with balloons and streamers. Everyone appears to be having a very good time.
The party-goers make their way into another room in the house, and many present the lady of the house with a bottle. They sit in the other room and around the fireplace. There they relax, chat, and share a box of chocolates. There is more dancing followed by shots of some of the Christmas decorations. The night ends as everyone sits at the dining room table while they eat dessert.
