Title - Smithy Moor
Jubilee Gala
The film opens with a parade of Gala Queens. (This portion of the film is slightly out of focus.) They all make their way up the street and towards Smithy Moor. The Queens all have their own Ladies-in-Waiting who hold the Queens' robes so they do not drag on the ground.
At Smithy Moor there is a small, raised stage on which the Gala Queens and participants sit. The Lord Mayor makes a speech, and he is followed by one of the Queens. They are handed gifts, and the filmmaker captures some images of the crowd who has gathered to watch the event.
Tables and stalls have been set up for the festival, and there are members of the town selling arts and crafts. There are also refreshment tables set up.
As part of the festivities, there is a fancy dress parade. All the children in costume are lined up on stage and seated in wooden chairs. There is one girl in particular who is dressed as a Gypsy and does not look as though she wishes to be part of the festivities. Hills and houses can be seen in the background when the camera turns towards the audience.
Back to the food and drink tables, and the townspeople are looking at some of the bottled refreshments available for purchase. Children are playing a carnival game where they have to throw a ball in a clown's mouth, and to make things more difficult, the clown's head is revolving in a circle.
The rest of the film is made up of various processions around the grounds and up and down a hilly street. Again, the Gala Queens are followed by younger children who hold their robes so as not to drag on the ground. Family members also accompany the processions as well as a group of Brownies.
Again, back on the stage, the children are lined up. This is followed by more shots of the crowd who are all dressed in contemporary 1970s fashions. The film ends with a man holding up a crown for the audience to see.
