Tile - H&M Films Once in Spring The film begins with a sign for Spalding, with views of the town centre, focusing on the sign for the Prior's Oven restaurant, with the commentary providing background information on the annual flower festival. At Springfields Gardens people are waiting by the entrance to the festival. The film shows the statue of Tulipan the Tulipman, erected in 1972, marking the introduction to this country of tulips from Turkey. The film takes us around the festival, starting with the restaurant and then the glasshouses, showing close ups of many of the flowers. One of the club members plays a rude joke with his camera. There are ducklings on the pond, and the windmill is in full swing. Others are filmed either using their cine cameras or taking photographs. The comic member of the club gives one of the statues a humorous rub around the breasts, 'for a cleaner exposure'. The film then goes behind the scenes to show the making of the impressive flower floats for the parade, being made with tulips. They then visit the fairground outside of Springfields, with two men dressed as black and white minstrels. Anglia Television is there to film the event. Crowds line the paths to watch the procession go past. A woman is holding a cine camera. The procession includes many floats, such as Oddfellows Friendly Society, and marching bands, with majorettes. Afterwards they visit Spalding Parish Church. The End
