Title - the Sheffield and Hallamshire Motor Club present the Fifth High Peak Sporting Trial
Production by Eric R. Hodgson
The Rising Sun Bamford October 22nd 1950
A number of cars are parked outside the Rising Sun public house, including several sports cars. People are then congregating in a field where there are more cars and a marquee. Some mechanics do last minute work on one of the sports cars (FCA 689). A woman hands a piece of paper to one of the contestants who does a mock feint. The marshal speaks to those assembled through a microphone. A man comes up to him with a clip board. His watch, showing the time, his held up to the camera. He reads out from the clip board next to a van covered in advertisements, with large loud speakers on top. A clock shows it approaching 10.00 am.
Intertitle - First Man Off
The first car, with number 1 on it, sets off with driver and passenger. It is followed by many more in a long queue, each one leaving at a set interval. One car has two passengers.
Intertitle - Bamforth Clough
The cars drive along a muddy tree lined path watched by spectators from the side. A man starts off in one of the cars on the muddy path.
Intertitle - Old Lees
As the cars pass along more muddy paths the passengers jump and down to provide more traction. One of the cars has a third woman passenger doing the jumping up and down.
Intertitle - Green-Hope
Cars pass around another bend, with more jumping up and down, with one of the cars having its wheels set at an angle. Despite the jumping up and down two cars grind to a halt on one particular muddy patch.
Intertitle - Pindale
A car is again set underway at this section of the race, followed by others. They pass along a narrow path with dry stone walls on either side. At one point they all have to do a reverse manoeuvre before moving on. Spectators watch from behind, or sit on, the dry stone walls.
Intertitle - Bathan Gate
A couple of drivers get some chips from a fish and chip van. Cars have to do a circle around a pole before proceeding. More cars queue to get underway, immediately having to do the circular manoeuvre. A couple of the cars hit the wall as they go around, having to do a three-point turn.
Intertitle - Litton Stack
There is a banner advertising Tennants' beer, 'good and strong'.
The drivers stop here to have a beer. One of the stewards is also having a beer. The race continues up an incline.
Intertitle - Cowdale
On this section the cars have to do a reverse manoeuvre, and the cars have to negotiate a very winding track down hill.
Intertitle - Cowlow
This section requires having to go up quite a steep rocky path, which the passenger also has to help with by jumping up and down. At the end of the race there is a large crowd scattered over a hill. The cars make their way to the Palace Hotel. A man puts up a banner for the 'Finish' on the Hotel wall. A car pulls up and signs a form handed to him by one of the stewards.
Intertitle - cordial thanks are extended to all who contributed to the success of the trial. Including the marshals, stewards, pushers and pullers, don r's, and not forgetting - the clerk of the B - course - 'Freddie'
Closing title - so here's to the next 'high peak'
One of the contestants raises a glass of beer to the camera.
