A week's relaxation
Mother writes hopefully.
A woman sits at her desk, facing the camera and writing. She has glasses and wears a striped shirt and three rings on her fingers. She completes her letter, folds it, and puts it into an envelope marked "Ely House, 15 Paget Road, Gt. Yarmouth".
Title - After suitable reply, Daddy amuses children while Mother packs.
Two little blonde girls sit on a man's knee, with a doll in the middle of them. One of the girls wears round glasses. A woman packs.
Title - Leaving York
On the side of a train is painted the logo for British Railways. They get on a steam train which is shown leaving York station.
Title - Passing the miles
The camera looks at people on the train. A little boy reads a magazine. The mother of the family reads the Harrogate Advertiser. A few people stand and stare out of the window. The layout of the train carriage is old fashioned, with an enclosed box with seats on one side and a long corridor running all the way down the train on the other.
There is a sign for "Paget Road" and then another for "Ely House Board Residence."
Title - The promenade and inland waterways.
There are shots of people at the sea front, sitting on benches, walking around, and of many people sat on deck chairs on the beach. Children play on a merry go round. There are people on tennis courts and a boat going up a river.
Title - Getting down to it.
The two little girls build sandcastles. A little boy tries to bury himself in the sand. A steam boat passes on the sea.
Title - Mother gives a hand.
The mother, wearing a white swimming cap, helps the boy to swim by holding him up under the water. She then swims alone. People dive off a high board. A sign below says "Please swim clear of diving stages and water chute."
Title - This suits Aline.
Lots of children sit and watch a Punch and Judy show. On the booth there is written "Lewison Puppet Theatre" and "Children, please keep off the stage". There is a clock on the front which gives the next performance time as being half four.
Title - Gorleston Beach and pier.
There are shots of the pier. People walk around a pond with little toy boats on it. On the beach, the children play with a racquet and ball. Waves hit against the rocks. Steamboats come in.
Title - Whose knees are these.
There is a close up of some legs stood in the sea. They are revealed to be the mother's. The family then play with a beach ball.
Title - Polly Flinders
A horse drawn carriage with the little girls in the back goes past the camera. The boy rides on a little pony. There is a sign for the Pleasure Beach. The whole family come down the Helter-Skelter. A sign for one attraction reads "As usual - unusual". The children go on another merry go round and look very excited, waving to the camera. Various other rides are shown including dodgems, a rollercoaster and a big wheel.
Title - Michael steers a steady course round Oulton Broad.
The boy drives a boat around a pound with his family in the back. A man fishes on the side. At a park, the children go on the slide and swings. They also go roller skating on a rink.
Title - Enid makes the most of the last day.
The children play on the beach and in the sea again. The family drink tea and eat on the beach also. There is then a night time scene. Written in lights is "Britannia Pier", with lights forming the shapes of animals and being strung along structures.
Title - Enjoying the return journey.
The York skyline is seen in the distance, dominated by the Minster.
Title - Home again. Was it worth it?
From within the house, it appears there is a build-up post under the letter box. The family enter. Mother unpacks, washes the clothes, and they dry on lines outside in the garden.
The film then changes to colour and a beach scene. A building features the sign "Royal Aquarium". Also on the building are posters, one for Gregory Peck in "Twelve O'clock High" and another for "School for Secrets" on Sunday. The same family walk down the promenade eating ice cream. They walk around a garden, swim in a pond. The father crosses a bridge with pram and a boat passes underneath it.
On the beach, there are lots of deckchairs. Back in the boat, the camera watches the river. The mother stands on the dock looking at a booklet. The children walk past a stall that says "Regent Tea Saloon. Noted for Best Ices. Fresh Teas Made". The boy holds a beach ball and the children wear white caps. They are once again shown on the merry go round.
Title - The End.
