“From Harrogate to Skipton and Kendal, staying awhile at Bowness”.
There are shots of the town, in which the church and shops are visible. There is a market selling fruit and vegetables. One of the people selling is a woman with dyed blonde hair and wearing a pearl necklace and earrings. The sellers are wearing white work coats. There is a lawn display, with flowers spelling out “Pannus Mihi Panis”. This shows we are in Kendal, as this is Kendal’s motto: Wool is my Bread. The camera looks at a war memorial statue. On a road, a car with the registration “CEC 469” passes. In the high street, there is a woman carrying a wicker basket full of shopping. The number 487 bus passes. Then the camera looks again at the market, and at flowers.
On a lake, a boat comes in to dock. A boy and woman look at a sign which shows a map of the water. The woman wears a straw hat with flowers in.
Intertitle: “A brief rest at Keswick”.
Two boys are on the water in a rowing boat. A little girl in a pink dress walks past with a dog. A mother and children then stand at the edge of the water, the mother throwing bread to some swans.
People sit at a lakeside café eating. Some little boys are fishing. The camera then looks at some buildings. One has the sign: “Stop. The Famous Blacksmith’s Shop. Stop. Gretna Green. Entrance found round the corner”. A man with bagpipes stands nearby. Another shop has the sign: “Scotland – tartan souvenirs”. There is a parked car outside with the registration: “RRM 200”. Another building: “This is the famous old Blacksmith’s shop and marriage room. Greta Green”. The window has painted on it: “House where Joseph Paisley the reputed old blacksmith […] one of the first priests to become famous 1733. Books, romance of Gretna Green, postcards, relics of the old priests and other antiquities”.
Intertitle: “Our first camp at Monrieth Bay with duties shared by all”.
The family’s tent is set up next to a very small building. The mother fries eggs whilst a daughter washes cups in a bowl. A boy boils an egg over a fire. There is a view of the sea from where they are camped.
The children play in a boat on the sea in swimming costumes. They also climb on rocks.
Intertitle: “The morning run along the coast road to Girvan and Ayr”.
Cars pass by on a sea side road. The children walk past a large statue. On a dock, there is a large flock of seagulls. In the town, there is a lawn display with flowers spelling out: “Saltcoats keeps you in tune”. The beach is very busy.
Intertitle: “Breakfast time by Loch Lomond and the village of Luss”.
The family have another picnic with eggs. The camera looks at places around the town, including a house covered in flowers and a waterfall.
Intertitle: “Loading cable at Oban for the transatlantic telephone”.
People stand around at a dock. One girl in a bright red all-in-one and yellow shoes stands out. A boat called “The Claymore” has products being taken off it by crane. There is a sign on deck: “Keep clear of propellers”.
Intertitle: “Connell bridge ferry”
A steam train passes over the bridge, going past the camera. There is a boat on the water below.
Intertitle: “Fishing for sea trout at Loch Crean”.
A man fishes in the loch. Two sheep lie down by the side of the water.
Intertitle: “A pleasant camp in Glen Coe before crossing Rannoch Moor”.
The family car is parked between some mountains, with the tent pitched beside it. There is low lying cloud on the peaks. Sheep are dotted about on the land, along with patches of pink flowers.
Intertitle: “Ballachulish ferry”.
A car drives onto a small ferry, capable of fitting on two cars. It goes across the water and docks on the other side.
Intertitle: “Fort William – port to the Isles”.
There is another boat. The camera looks at buildings in the town, shops and buildings including: “Macbraynes”, “The Grand Hotel” and “British Railways Fort William Station”.
Intertitle: “Grazing peacefully beneath Ben Nevis”.
Cows stand eating grass. There are some bulls, fenced in, with very large horns. This is followed by more mountain shots.
Intertitle: “Spean bridge Commando memorial”.
The monument’s inscription reads: “In memory of the officers and men of the Commandos who died in the Second World War 1939-1946. This country was their training ground”. There is a statue on top of three soldiers.
Intertitle: “The Caledonian canal at Fort Augustus”.
The camera looks at scenic views and the canal.
Intertitle: “Camping beside Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle”.
There are shots of the tent and the loch.
Intertitle: “Inverness with its interesting castle and bridges”.
There is a street with a traffic conductor in the foreground. There are signs pointing out “South and East (A69)” and “North and West (A82)”. The shop behind has a window advert for “Scott’s Porage”. There are shots of the town and a statue.
Intertitle: “Elgin castle in Cooper Park”.
There are shots of the ruined Elgin cathedral. People sit by a lake. Some children are in a pedalo. Others feed the swans. Both girls from the family wear polka dot dresses.
Intertitle: “Unloading and fish auction at Lossiemouth”.
The camera looks at another dock. The ship in the foreground is marked: “INS.136”. Products are lifted off by crane. There are then shots of inside a warehouse, which is full of boxes with fish in.
Intertitle: “Ballater, with its royal station”.
There are sheep in a field, and then shots of a white bridge and the town.
Intertitle: “Crathie church, Balmoral and Braemar”.
The camera looks at the church, its architecture, and then at it from a distance. There are shops, “Braemar post office” and “Andrew Collie and Coy Ltd. Grocers, wine and spirit merchants – by appointment to HM King George VI”.
Intertitle: “Descending Devil’s Elbow from Britain’s highest public road”.
The family feed sheep out of the car window. There is a sign showing the boundary marking between Aberdeen and Perth, “height above sea level 2187 feet”. The car drives down a very bendy road down a hill.
Intertitle: “The great Scottish hydro-electric plant at Pitlochry”.
People look over a bridge towards the plant.
Intertitle: “Loch Katrine in the Trossachs”.
The camera looks at the lake and the Trossachs Hotel.
Intertitle: Stirling castle, now the home of the Argyle and Sutherland highlanders”.
There is a shot of a stained glass window, seen from inside, and then cannons along the walls of the castle. A man in a kilt passes by.
Intertitle: “The might fourth bridge at South Queensburg”.
A train passed on a bridge high overhead. A boat goes past on the water underneath.
Intertitle: “Our final time in Scotland was spent in Edinburgh”.
The camera films busy city scenes. The number twenty six bus is seen passing.
Intertitle: “The famous Princes Street and gardens”.
The camera looks at the statue: “The Call 1914”. This features a soldier holding a gun and wearing a kilt. A war memorial is also shown.
Intertitle: “The Zoo”.
In the zoo, the camera looks at a fox, lion, bears, flamingos, penguins (and a keeper feeding them fish), a giraffe and some polar bears.
Intertitle: “The Castle”.
People walk about the castle, and examine the cannons.
