This film is made by pupils at Newman School based in Rotherham, which is a special school for students with physical disabilities and medical conditions. This film features two students taking a humorous look at Jamie Olives Television series, 'Jamie's School Dinners', and assessing whether there is any truth to the negative stereotypes it bestowed upon Northerners.
Title - Jamie's Ministry of food.
The film opens with a shot of Jamie Oliver (the renowned TV chef) driving a car, before the following shot shows a chalk board menu with the heading, 'Jamie's school dinners'. A short montage then captures Jamie Oliver working his culinary magic in a school canteen. A student stands in front of a sign that reads, 'Welcome to Newman School', and says, "If you live in a cave, you may have failed to notice Jamie Oliver's arrival in our town". Another student then remarks that his arrival has put Rotherham firmly on the map.
Using brief cutaways taken from Jamie's TV programme, 'Jamie's School dinners', the two students illustrate the point that thanks to the chef Northerners are now best known for their love of junk food. But, armed with their very own video cameras, the boys will investigate whether there is any truth to this notion.
They start by analysing the TV shows directive: to teach the people of Rotherham how to cook and understand the meaning of good food, which the boys feel is rather patronising. Vox Pops capture students and teachers opinions on Jamie Olive: the first male student takes a very negative view of Jamie, as now he can no longer eat the things he likes; two members of staff then say that eating well is all about a varied and balanced diet. The film closes with a student giving a piece to camera, saying, "There, now you have it folks. I'll let you decide".
